Norton is a bit weak with the security for software about a couple years ago, if I recall correctly. Personally, I don't use an anti-virus program because to me it IS a virus. It hogs resources and slows everything down, but you're trying to prevent a virus that slows everything down and hogs resources? Seriously, come on now... Just make sure you have Windows Firewall on, with reasonably recent Windows Updates, and you should be fine-- unless you want to install all weird stuff and pirate software, then, by all means, get something good. I'd go with free, like AVG, if I had to use something.
AND REMEMBER, THE MOST IMPORTANT PART:
Any security software is only as good as the latest update. So updating often is the KEY to good security!!!
Oh, and 1 more thing. How you use the computer is the biggest factor. Don't open e-mails (specifically, don't show the pictures) for e-mails from any unknown sources. It's complicated, but trust me.

Norton and McAfee are resource hogs and not worth the money. There are several free options that work great. If you want an "install it & forget it" anti virus then try Panda Cloud http://www.cloudantivirus.com/en/ You won't have to worry about any kind of configuring and it works very, very well.
If you want something that has more user options available then look at...

McAfee is not a resource hog, maybe if all the extras are installed. I only install the Anti-Virus and the Firewall, that is all you need. All the other stuff they have for you to install maybe where people are having problems.
