Do you legally drive? If so you had to buy, or someone had to buy for you, car insurance. Similar situation. Also, it isn't everyone. If you already have health insurance you don't have to do anything. This applies only to people who don't have their own coverage when the law goes into effect. They estimate that this bill will apply to about 30 million Americans. The reason I am for this is that it eliminates the concern over pre-existing conditions. I am currently only insured becuase my wife is a teacher, and therefore a state government employee. I am insured on her insurance. Its a good thing too. When I wasn't on her insurance I called several insurance companies and none would insure me becuase I had a pre-existing condition (Bipolar Disorder). If someone has a pre-existing condition they better hope their job has good insurance, or they are screwed, until this health care bill passes, then they will be able to get insurance through the government since no one else will cover them. I think that is a good thing, especially since many of the 30 million that will be helped by this are children who's parents don't have adequate insurance through their jobs.

The government is preventing health insurers from denying coverage for pre-existing conditions. The mandate is there to prevent Americans from taking advantage of this new regulation by not getting health insurance until they need it. This would drive private insurers out of business since people would only get the insurance whenever they had medical bills to pay.
It's kind of like how states require driver's insurance to be licensed to drive. The difference is that government can't stop people from seeking health care just because they are uninsured. Therefore, the government has decided to levy fines against the uninsured instead.
If we can't reform health care coverage because it isn't in the Constitution, then Americans should be free to smoke marijuana legally. The authority to ban drugs isn't part of the Constitution, either.

It's Constitutional, because there is nothing in the Constitution that prevents it.
I don't have a problem with making sure people that can afford it, pay into the system.
