What's the difference between it's and its?
Anywhere I look it up, I get clashing answers. Some say it's is possessive, and some say it's is a contraction. I'm confused. It would help if anyone had any tricks to remembering the rule. Thank you!

it's/its and who's/whose seem to confuse everyone!
Normally putting 's at the end of a word makes it possessive. Everyone learns that rule. But! "It" and "who" are both exceptions to that rule.
The possessive:
it = its
who= whose
When you see either of those with 's on the end, it will always be a contraction. It is. Who is.
Hope this helps.

The words it's and its are commonly confused: the apostrophe of omission (it's) is confused with the possessive (its). It's always means it is or it has , and is never to be used in place of the possessive its. Example:
It's a beautiful day = it is a beautiful day
(the apostrophe simply indicates the contraction; it stands in for the missing 'i'.)

Basically, you use "it's" in a sentence when you're actually supposed to use "it is" but ur too lazy too lol. So every time you use "it's" ask yourself, does the sentence need "it is" or its.

All you have to do is replace (mentally or physically) "it's" with "it is".. If it works, then "it's" is correct. The easiest thing to do is avoiding the use of "it's" altogether.
