Is this true? (stupid 20 characters)?
Is it true that it is physically impossible for a horse to flip over backwards by themselves, that whenever a horse flips over after rearing it's because the rider was pulling too hard??
I've never heard this before and I was just wondering.

No, that is not true. It's rare for a horse to flip over backward, but not impossible.

I know of a horse than has flipped over backwards, he spooked while in his stall. Thankfully he was okay but he just flipped over, then got up a few seconds later. But they're completely capable of doing it either way.
When a horse rears and a rider pulls a bit back that's just adding more fuel to the fire the horse is going to flip backwards.
Hope that helps!

Not true, at all.
I've seen it happen when a horse spooks and rears and sometimes when they're just playing around (mostly that happens to yearlings though ---->they play around more and have more energy).
ADD: oh, and yes, a lot of the times it can be because of the handler/rider. When we were at an auction once, a man was leading a halter yearling and the horse didn't want to go forward. Then the man started yanking on the chain over his nose and backing him up. You could just see the confusion and how scared the poor guy was in his eyes. He didn't know what the man was asking (it was obviously a very, very green horse & the man was asking him to back up in an inappropriate way) and did the only thing he could think of to get away from him. He reared and flipped over right on the concrete.
ADD 2: Was just searching on youtube and stumpled across this video.
Thought you might like to see the beginning of it.

Nope, not true. It's possible for a horse to flip over on its own, I saw it happen at an auction once. The poor horse was scared out of its mind though, which is why it did that.
However, horses are smart animals! They know that flipping over is very dangerous for them and they won't do it on purpose. Normally when a horse flips, it's because it rears too high and loses its balance... the loss of balance can be caused by a rider, someone tugging on a lead rope, or uneven ground.

False.
It's just the same as someone over balancing backwards. They rear too vertically and just flip over. I've seen a horse do it to the rider on purpose, slammed her backwards into the ground (she was ok). My instructors horse reared in the carpark once, refusing to get on the float, went over backwards and broke his wither on the ground (he's ok, just got a wonky wither that you can't put a saddle on).

I wouldn't say it couldn't happen, just unlikely. Maybe if they were running fast and came to a fence ant tried to stop, they might slide under with hocks, and flop over sideways. Yes I think it is generally the riders fault when it does happen. Rearing is something you should not let your horse do or encourage it in any way.
Source(s): Experience! I find that it is the dishonest counterfit horses that are mosts likely to start rearing. - 1 decade ago
No, completely untrue.
Horses can rear up too high, have their center of gravity be too far back, and flip.
I've seen a few horses do it in the paddock because they're spooking, insane, whatever and just can't get their center of gravity centered in time.

This is mindless. Tom Hanks has been performing for some years. he's a superb actor, director, producer. the place's the assessment? Charlie Sheen is youthful and as stupid as they arrive.

Most of the time, they're smarter than to flip over backwards, but they are fully capable of doing it on their own. I've seen it.
