Stud prefix names/ideas?
Hi,
Just looking for ideas for stud prefixes/performance horse prefixes? I've decided that I'd like to add a prefix to the horses I retrain and sell. My initials are KK but I'd like any ideas in general, kind of wanted something more than 'KK Diamond Lights'. Eg a friend of mine used 'Royal Palms' or 'Bellivia Park'.
Thanks!
3 AnswersHorses9 years agoLiver gelding riding pony names?
Hi,
I just bought a cute 15hh, 11yo, liver chestnut riding pony gelding from the sales. Very sweet and cheeky nature. He didn't come with a name (spoke briefly to the guy that brought him there but I wasn't interested yet so didn't ask for name *facepalm*). Wondering if you guys have any name suggestions? And a good, catchy show name to match.
His name is Java for now, any ideas for show names or do you have a better name?

(if link doesn't work oh well LOL)
Thanks!
4 AnswersHorses1 decade agoCatchy, clever showname + barn name?
ugh I know, ANOTHER question regarding show names :P
I'm looking after/riding a pony currently that I think I'll be offered eventually because they can't sell her and if that arises I'm keen to change her name (I'm normally not one for it but I really dislike it).
Her name's Flicka (which would mean show name would be My Friend Flicka, which yeah no, how many Flicka's are there seriously?) and she's chestnut (which I find just doesn't work cause in the movie she's black).
So I'm looking for some clever and catchy showname HAS to go with a potential barn name (something that gets announced/you read on the draw and it's like ahhhh that's kinda cool).
ie. my tb's name is Spider, showname Itsy Bitsy Spider (which also works cause he's huge, I get commented everywhere that it's a cool showname)
She's chestnut welshXtb (if that helps I dunno lol), and no I don't know her dam/sire
Plz no one do the 'aw but Flicka's such a cute name it suits her'- that's not what I'm asking
Thank you!
4 AnswersHorses1 decade agoRegrown hair over brands?
My pony's brands are no longer visible. She's arab warmblood and her brands were visible when she was purchased as a yearling (seen pics where they're visible) and they're on her papers (she does have them). She's 6 now and you cannot see them, she has a short coat and she's always rugged up with a stable light during the winter so she doesn't grow a winter coat (I've even clipped them and they aren't visible). Her 2 angloarab sister's are the same and another arab mare at our stables, they are branded but you cannot see them. Does anyone know if this is because of a particular type of branding or what? Anyone know a horse like this?
3 AnswersHorses1 decade agoRosette number in manes? Odd/even? Does it matter?
I've always learnt that you should plait odd number of rosettes in mane (+ forelock = even), well it's not something that I've had to do but I'm OCD so I always have stuck to that as my own rule (also heard that you should traditionally plait on the right side but I was just taught to plait the way the mane falls). I recently found out that it used to be traditional for geldings to have an odd amount in their mane (which means it's been OK cause I have a gelding) and that it's traditional for mares to have an even number in the mane (+ forelock). Does it even matter anymore? Does anyone stick by this anymore? Is it something that judges even look at? I've been doing hacking for some time (I'm the only enthusiest at my stables), I've been a ring steward/marshall, get paid to groom and to plait but it's something I've never really noticed.
4 AnswersHorses1 decade agoDifference between Lightweight and Heavyweight Galloway?
Now I would assume that it's their build. Lightweight built finer, heavyweight built chunkier. But I've seen the two classes at shows (and stewarded for the ring) and I couldn't tell the difference between the two classes, it wasn't noticeable. Then my friend mentioned that it might be the breeding behind the galloway or something.
So can anyone clarify what's the difference (with photos?)? I've also now got a horse that'll be in the galloway ring and I have no idea which class to go in (she's Arabian Warmblood, 14.3 1/2hh).
1 AnswerHorses1 decade agoDisengaging in canter?
Hi,
My horses canter is a lot of work, she apparently constantly disengages in her canter. Can someone fully explain this term to me (I'm experienced, just never had a horse that does this)? From what's been described to me (and you feel her doing it under you) she changes her back legs (like a flying change just with her back legs) then just falls flat in her canter (and it's spazzy cause her back legs are wrong, I bring her back and start again), she doesn't drift over or anything, she'll do it whilst on a straight line. I know how to disengage a horses hindquarters by pushing them across but it's not like that. Anyone had any experience with this? Got any tips?
At the moment I'm lifting her front end up with reins (not tightly, just hands up, so she doesn't disengage and fall into it, she has quite a nice araby uphill canter), pushing her forwards with legs to keep her going (and her legs moving), bum deep and hips tilted forward. This keeps her going longer without disengaging, I'll get like 2 laps of a 20m circle (just letting her canter I'll get 1 lap). When she does it I bring her back, get her balanced again in trot and go back into canter.
So yeah, anyone had experience? Got tips? Excercises?
2 AnswersHorses1 decade agoWhat breeds (pics)...?
These are two ponies that my friend and I ride for their 11yo owners. We were just wondering what breeds you think they may be (we get asked by people)? They're both 14hh, chestnut with flaxen mane/tail.
1. Candy, she was bought as a crossbreed. We guess stock x, what do you think (I've seen a pony advertised as stock x TB that looked like her, dunno where they got 14hh from)? She's a very fine and slender built pony, long legs and skinny with a long face (opposite build to Belle).

2. Belle, she was bought from the sales as a complete unknown (she was a bit wild and feral at first, had barely been touched, brushing was like a torture session, she's good now, very cute, although abandoned by her owner that is too young and inexperienced to look after or ride her). We guess a bit of stock, welsh (she has a welshy face), and Appaloosa (she has appy spotting on her shoulders and back). She is built very stocky, she's a barrel on legs. What do you think?

Thanks, pics of breeds would be good to compare. I'll try and get pics of Belle's appy colouring. There's a few more pics of them in the pb album (only interested in Belle and Candy, I know the other two horses in that album are TBs lol)...
4 AnswersHorses1 decade agoNon prescribed sedation for clipping?
I'm looking for a sedation that I can use so I can clip my horse's head. He's fine with the rest of his body (he stood at the fence, untied, for 2 hours, without even batting an eye). Before I started his body I lent the clippers on his face while they were on and he was fine with them, but when I went to do his head after I'd done his body he just ripped his head in the air (he was over it). I don't really don't want to twitch him, because it doesn't work, he just rears, I want to do it very calmly. He's not a nervous, freaky or nutty horse, he's very calm, mellow and dopey, I reckon even something like Tryptophane might work (I'd never paste for a show because it would seriously send him to sleep). I'm wondering if anyone can recommend anything else, something that I don't have to get through the vet, otherwise I'll have to get Ace prescribed (our vet is really hard to get in touch with, even when it's something serious, like a horse has ripped a massive whole in his stomach). And please don't say don't bother doing his head, I think it looks really ugly, he's chestnut, his body's now really light blondey, palomino-y and his heads really dark orange chestnut (and really fluffy- ick!). I am going to re try it tomorrow and start with his head so he's not bored and completely over it, he might be fine then...
Thanks
1 AnswerHorses1 decade agoCollegiate Convertible Post Graduate Dressage Saddle? Opinions?
Does anyone have any opinions on the Collegiate Convertible Post Graduate Dressage Saddle? I think I may have ridden in one before but I'm not sure (I loved the saddle I was in).
Thanks
1 AnswerHorses1 decade agoShort boots compulsory for junior riders? Why?
Why in some comps (pony club, rider classes etc) are short boots compulsory for junior riders (junior riders, under 17yrs, not allowed to wear tall boots)? This might only be in Australia. I've heard different reasons and I want to know the right reason. Some people say it's a safety reason (huh?), or that it's so the judge can see the riders ankle (huh?). My reasoning for it is perhaps it's so at comps the judges can tell who can go in open and child classes, I dunno... I'm asking cause I hate wearing short boots. My friend wears tall boots even when gear check tells her not to.
7 AnswersHorses1 decade agoSome songs to trot to?
What are some songs (modern songs) that have the trot beat?
My instructor got me to download Elton John 'Crocodile Rock', it gets boring on the iPod...
5 AnswersHorses1 decade agoIs this a faint snip?
http://s7.photobucket.com/albums/y267/mango_tango_...
You can see a small white line on his left hand side on his muzzle. It's a definate small line of white, it's not just a couple of hairs. I onlt ask this because my friends fancy show horse is registered and she has a couple of white hairs and it's called a star on her papers.
11 AnswersHorses1 decade agoShow names for my horse Spider?
Yay it's another question on show names!
My horses stables name is Spider, I'm looking to register him with the equestrian federation to accumulate points for shows this year, anyway I was just wondering what suggestions you guys have. I need to supply 5 names.
This is what I have so far
Spider
Arana de Caballo (horse spider in latin, I really want this one)
Gran Turismo Spider (it's a model of ferrari)
If you guys have better ones I'll go with them, I'm really stumped with ideas...
I want it to have something to do with his name. Like my friends horse's name is Exploration and her show name is Dora the Explorer (it originated from a funny convo with her non horse friends). I have another friend who's horses name is Cruz and his show names Cruz Control (or Vodka Cruz's, or Cruz n Around).
11 AnswersHorses1 decade agoWill molasses fizz or make a feed sensitive TB hot?
My horse is young and feed sensitive. Can't have any oats or grain, basically it makes him naughty and reary lol. Lots of fun.
Will molasses make him hot? Just cause it's like sugar so...
Thanks!
I'm trying to find something to mix in his extras as they're all in pellet form and it's too dry for him.
6 AnswersHorses1 decade agoA cool vitamin/mineral supplement (australia)?
I'm looking for a vitamin/mineral supplement for my young thoroughbred. I'm just wondering if I try something it might make him hot. He's REALLY EXTREMELY feed sensitive. He can't have any oats or grains AT ALL, it makes him rear and really naughty.
He gets twice a day in a 20L bucket, a big handful of salt, 1 scoop pollard, 3 scoops pellets, 2 scoops ezi-result (it's an extra steam extruded feed), rest filled with chaff, and a flake of hay. Twice a week he also gets 1-2 handfuls of cyllium husk (sp?) as he's kept on sand and it helps move sand out of their digestive tract to prevent colic.
He's a 17hh, 5yo TB. At the moment he's not getting any extra feed from me until he behaves (it makes him muck up a bit which is odd cause it's plain and cool) so he's skinnier than he normally is. He's not really skinny, he's just not as fat as he normally is, he's on the lower end of normal weight.
He's been picking through his/other horses poo too, which is an indicator that he's not getting enough vitamins/minerals.
I just don't want something that could make him hot. Anyone got any suggestions of supplements preferably available in Australia.
Thanks!
Let me know if you need more info!
4 AnswersHorses1 decade agoHorse growth? (how tall will he get?)?
My horse is a 17hh chunky thoroughbred (he's quite big boned, he looks like he might have a touch of something big like shire etc in his breeding a bit back but his pedigree says that he's all thoroughbred)and he's just turned 5yo a few weeks ago. I know that horses stop growing at around 5-8years and I was just wondering if anyone knows about how much he'll grow to. Any personal experience?
Thanks!
3 AnswersHorses1 decade agoLooking for a tougher/harsher bit than the loose ring snaffle?
I'm asking this on behalf of my friend. She's looking for a slightly harsher bit than the loose ring snaffle (but nothing too hard core or anything). It's not that her horse holds or avoids the bit or anything it's just that she finds that it responds too slow and it's not really putting much force/pressure on his mouth (it's kind of hard to explain).
13 AnswersHorses1 decade agoFeed prices, Australia?
I'm looking for the prices of regular bags or whatever (just approx prices) of,
CopRice (M pellets?)
Fatten Up
Ezi Result
Mitavite Economix
Molasses
Just any of these prices will do if you know them.
Thanks!
4 AnswersHorses1 decade agoInfection in knee. Treatment tips?
My horse has an infection in his knee (left front leg) and it's swollen up. The vet hasn't been able to come out all week but he's been put on penicillin (an injection everyday), he has this spray stuff (for open wounds) that's being sprayed on it too and we're watering it everyday for like 15mins to cool it so the swelling goes down (and it's working). We think that he might have had a little tiny cut (that they originally couldn't find) or a splinter and it got infected, we turned up one morning and his knee had gone up like a balloon. The first few days we couldn't find the cut that caused it but now puss slowly oozing out of it (it's weeping a bit). He's alright, the treatment's working and we've been cleared to go for walks.
I was just wondering if anyone has any tips to help get the swelling down? Would cooling bandages (like the Equi-N-icE) help?
