Why do people make commitments to join the military when they are clearly too immature?

I've seen several questions on here from people who have made commitments to join the military (DEP or Delayed Enlistment Programs) and now want to get out of those commitments for various reasons. Do these people not understand what they are being told? Do they think that they should be able to just walk away from a commitment with no consequences? How can they expect anyone to ever trust them to honor any commitment or promise that they make in the future?

Update:

Thanks for all of the answers. I'm actually pretty familiar with, and don't really disagree with any of them. I mostly wrote the question in response to a couple of questions that I saw in here asking about how to get out of DEP. I just sort of hope that somebody might read it, consider what they're about to do, and maybe not make a mistake. Probably a vain hope, but it made me feel better...

Welcome to the new millenium! Have you read any of the other questions put up by young people that are thinking about enlisting? They're only concerned about what's in it for them, or they want to know which job to get so they won't have to go to Iraq or Afghanistan. That's why I hope and pray that the individuals I encounter here asking these type of questions NEVER make it into my United States Armed Forces...

A main problem stems from many of these kids believing the information from the last person they talked to. If it is their recruiter, they are good to go. Then they will meet someone who hated the military, or knew someone who hated the military, and then they start to get cold feet. The military is definitely not for everybody, and any decision on joining should not be taken lightly. Unfortunately many are coddled by their parents, and they cry to them to help them get out of any legal commitments they made. And the parents do them a huge disservice by letting them live with them till they "sort things out." If the parents made them abide by their words, they would more than likely grow up much more productive citizens of this great country.

It depends on the reason they want to get out.

Do you really want someone to go through with the commitment when they will be worthless to the military. They will be the type that will always cause problems and bring morale down.

Better they change their mind in DEP than trying to get out while in training.

i joined, im immature, and that probably wont change. DEP=/= joining the military... they still have the chance to leave as long as they dont sign the papers the day they fly out. Once they do that, then I believe they should fufill their contract. I think we should have harder requirements too. I hate seeing fat bodies in my Army.

People don't think it through, or they join up for the benefits without realising that most likely, they WILL have to go to war at some point.

Part of it is being raised in a society that excuses everything and tries to hold no one responsible. It makes me glad I'm not a recruiter.

military recruiters promise teenagers with various little rewards, such as money, automobiles, travel, etc.

they offer free education through various plans (here in USA, it's the Montgomery G.I. bill), but fail to mention that there is little choice in your educational pathways (i.e., they pick your career for you), and they never mention that most of them will take the enlistment bonus and waste it on alcohol as soon as they are dismissed, and never use the free education at all.

they promise that a great career awaits all military personnel upon dismissal, but never mention that a great career depends on the economy, not a checkbox on an application (i.e., you're not going to get a great job if there aren't any out there), and, this coupled with the fact that most of them won't use the free education dooms their opportunity in finding anything better than factory or restaurant work.

they impression the idea that without the military, no average person has any chance of getting a higher education, despite the fact that billions of dollars are given away every year to students in the forms of scholarships, not to mention the billions in government grants, and the fact that you can get student loans at very low interest and not have to even start paying them back until you graduate.

in addition, they have successfully used the media to make a soldier worship society of the U.S., so teenagers, full of impressionability and lacking foresight and logical thought, see soldiers as being highly respected wherever they are.

so, to recap, it's all lies. they use various media to promote the idea that a soldier will be respected, educated, and successful, but fail to mention that most of them come home with no education, no job, and no resource, just to be another mindless, brainwashed tool who spends his 40k on useless, trite objects.

also, you'll notice they use subliminal targeting of minorities. and it works great. military recruitment commercials subliminally target minorities, especially hispanics and african americans. just watch for it, you'll see it. they chose these groups because a greater percentage of them come from lower middle class and impoverished homes than do other racial/ethnical groups, which in turn means a greater percentage of them will see life as hopeless, and as such will go to greater extremes to make things better for themselves.

impressionable youth enter the military with the greatest intentions and aspirations, and leave as brainwashed, mindless fascist tools meant to serve as the enforcement wing of conservatives to ensure another decade of wealth and power on the backs of the working class.
