Can you bring up a 1.975 college GPA...tips plz?
So my first semester in college I struggled tremendously with trying to balance my course load and managing my personal time and what I do with it. Now my GPA is horrible and I'm wondering is it possible for my gpa to ever go up? I know I'm going to do much better my second semester because I have a feel of college now. I need my gpa to be at least a 3.0

It will not be mathematically possible for A LONG time; im talking maybe not untill your senior year. with a GPA that low, youll probably need to take all 4 credit courses for several semesters and get all A's or A-'s...its really easy to lower your GPA, but really hard to raise it. Anything above a C+ will help; but only A's MIGHT bring your overall GPA to a 3.0, getting an A in a 2 credit class wont really help because of the way they calculate GPA, that is if your school follows the standard GPA calculation. So it is Possible, but VERY hard...I wish You Luck!

Well your probably not going to get it that high right away- but what do you think is getting in your way? Do you have a job getting in the way- if so, you may have to balance if you can handle both- whats more important the money or the classwork? But, what else is getting in your way- we cant help much without specifics. You may wish to speak with your counselor or advisor and they can help as well- its there job. Maybe you can drop your course load to the minimum 12 credits and add one in the summer? Maybe college isnt for you right now and you can consider transferring to a cc for a year to get the gpa up (start fresh with a new gpa)? Maybe your social life is taking too much time- and you need to tell people im busy (aka no more drinking on the weekends?) Just a few thoughts- not all may apply to you, but without you being specific we cant do much for you other than throw things out that may be getting in your way of schoolwork.
But I can say one thing- if you cant handle it now, it only gets much tougher from here, 100 level classes as a freshman are easy, so you need to get a handle on things quickly (and since your probably on probation- you dont have a choice anyways).

A 3.0 by the end of the year might be a bit too high of a goal (do you need that for a scholarship?) Mathematically, it would require you to take at least one more unit and get straight A's. Turning things around is certainly possible, although doing it that quickly and drastically might be a bit excessive of a goal. (if your goal is a 3.0 for second semester, that may be doable).
Some general tips (please forgive me if some of these are obvious):
Attend all classes and labs.
Take notes in class.
When applicable, participate in class - ask questions and listen to the answers.
Read the material for class before class (not right before, but like the night before). Ask yourself questions about the material, and if you cannot answer them make a mental note to ask others (whether in class, discussion groups, or office hours).
Attend office hours with any questions you have.
Set aside time to read, study, and review the material. Set aside a quiet place (even if you have to go to the library) to do so as well.
Get plenty of sleep (both so you can be alert in class, and because sleeping is when our brains store the information we learn).
Make sure you keep up with the material. Double your efforts and use resources (office hours, tutors) as soon as you start to fall behind - or even if you're not behind.
Moderation in all things. Take time to take care of yourself (beyond study or social activities). Don't take too many units so that you overwhelm yourself, and if you drink - know your limit and stick to it (or don't drink at all).

Okay well everybody says it is mathematically impossible. Well there's only one possible way, and that is to retake all your classes that you messed up in again, and get an A....that will replace your previous grade and you will go up to a 4.0 hopefully. This doesn't look good though if you had to retake everything, also the college might average it out. At my school if you retake it, the new grade replaces the old one when calculating the GPA.
good luck!...personal time? I hope you mean work and stuff like that and not things like partying and drinking
