What do you think of my top 11 underrated anime series?

11- Shuffle

Now, everyone would not take a harem seriously, the only harems that people found great were Ranma 1/2 and Tenchi Universe, however, Shuffle was not only funny, but it took itself seriously, particularly in the 2nd half of the series for being more character-driven while the 1st half utilized the usual harem formula only to introduce the characters before giving the show 'story arcs' it didn't fully rely on fan service all the time or perverted jokes even though they were there but clean jokes about the characters themselves are present, which is rare for a harem of 24 episodes.

10- Space Runaway Ideon

his series is infamous for getting Yoshiyuki Tomino the Kill'em All Tomino nickname, because everyone in this show dies, and the universe is destroyed. However, I have been lucky enough to several episodes online, and the last movie, and I must say it is a very good series that does not get enough attention. Hideaki Anno said that this series was his inspiration for Neon Genesis Evangelion.

9- Shakugan No Shana

This anime did not become big enough for the second seasons to get an American release. However, the anime was fun and incorporated action adventure and slice of life which gives some depth on the characters personalities. I like it when they do that.

8- Chrono Crusade

This series started out slow and some find this series sacrilegious although I was not offended. I found the characters interesting, and they had a lot of depth to them, and weren't just one dimensional characters that showed one emotion.

7- Cyborg 009

There was an 80's show but I never got around to seeing that but the newer series made a few years ago was just awesome.

6- Teknoman

One of my all-time fav classics which is practically forgotten now. Anime that deal with post-apocalyptic scenarios tend to be the most detailed in background story, Teknoman was no exception, it was like the Japanese equivalent to Ironman for Otaku's, as in a guy wears a robotic suit and kicks ***. The animation was great. Personally, I find the animation quality of 90's anime, not better, but more effort was put into them, colors were brighter and they emphasized more on lighting and shading, so you'd have bright parts on a character while others were ultra dark. Amazing, especially when they're in space or when they're showing sunset scenes.

5- After War Gundam X

Gundam in general is awesome but this series was nice change by having the lead not gloomy and depressing, but sort of like Duo Maxwell from Gundam Wing. But they did not stoop so low as to make it corny and campy just for a more optimistic character, they were able to keep the seriousness and political flavor that Gundam is best known for. I personally liked it more than Turn A Gundam.

4- Transformers: Car Robots

I understand the hate for this series, the dub was horrible and the subbed version was unavailable until recently. But the original Japanese version is a real Transformers series that stays true to the spirit of G1 but takes liberties being a different series. It was dark but comedic. Loved the character AI (T-AI in the American version)

3- Captain Tsubasa

The first ultra cool sports anime, it's extremely popular in Japan, Europe and Middle East and South America but completely frowned upon in North America due to it being centered on Football (soccer). It was so popular that it transformed Japan's Football into a niche market to the most popular sport replacing the sissy ones like Baseball. Say what you will, but almost every sports anime that came after copied so many elements from Captain Tsubasa.

2- Black Lagoon

One ultra kickass anime series that caters my manliness. Guns, cars and big tough machismo. All the things that guys like to see and want to have. Sorry, but if you watch it and find it say you didn't feel pumped from it then you're not a guy. It's like an anime version of the action movies from the 80's that were REAL action movies made for GUYS like Rambo, Die Hard (except 4) and Commando. Unlike the sissiness of today like 300 and Jason Bourne.

1- Tales of the Abyss

This is an anime that no one seems to know exists. I first played the game and I thought it was fantastic that I had to watch the anime version. It's got a great cast of characters that all support one another and are vital to the story. They were written specifically for the story, many anime just have characters that make you think 'why didn't the writer just make them do that?' Tales of the Abyss is a story that wrote itself, the world was consistent like that of Naruto, it wasn't random, everything has importance to the story.

I can agree with most of your selections especially the shout out for Ideon (everyone dies horribly at the end, even the children) and Black Lagoon is one of the best action anime titles available. I'd add a couple of others that don't ever seem to make people's lists: Janguru wa Itsumo Hare nochi Gū is a must watch for comedy fans, the same for Cromartie High School. I'd also add Goldenboy for all the toilet worshiping comedy fans and Detriot Metal City for just the concept and the laugh effect. And finally I'd add Beck as one of the best music related anime out there (it's easily on my top 10 list).

Wow it's an amazing list. I only know Tales of the Abyss (I played the game, too, so I like the anime), Chrono Crusade (watched about 5 episodes ><), and Black Lagoon (I like it but it's not on my top 20). I think they're probably underrated because, as you said, many people don't know they exist while they're obviously better than some popular ones. But the fact is most of overrated anime (or so many people say) are really good in my opinion (Naruto, Death Note, Fullmetal Alchemist,...) I really don't have time to look at the underrated anime...

I would disagree with Chrono Crusade, Shuffle!, Shakugan no Shana, and Black Lagoon. All of these are extremely popular with American and Japanese fans. I would say that not licensing Shana was not due to the popularity, but because most people were watching the fansubs of Geneon's series.

  • Wow you´re an expert, to tell the truth i don´t know none of these series but caught my attention:

    Space Runaway Ideon

    Shakugan No Shana
