Where in the country is the shortest day the shortest?
I used to live in Southern California. I now live in Auburn, California (Northern Ca) Maybe it's me but it seems like the sun went down , on the shortest day of the year, much earlier in So Cal then it does up here in North Ca. Does where you are have anything to do with the time? Like north south east or west?

The further north you go, the shorter the day is on the winter solstice (Dec 21, i think). Eventually, near the artic circle, the issue compounds, and eventually the question becomes problematic, as the 'day', with the sun is 6 months, and the 'night', without the sun is 6 months.
East/West has nothing to do with it. Having said that, there may be some slight variations within the time zone you are in (the sun rises slightly later as you go west within the same time zone).
And of course, the exact opposite of what I said above as you go farther south from the equator.

The further North, the shortest the day at the winter solstice. It only depends on your latitude. The day lasts about 12 hours year round near the equator and varies from almost 0 (windet) to 24 hours (summer) close to the polar circle.

quite, the better south you go as we talk of three hundred and sixty 5 days, the shorter the era of daylight hours. In maximum of Antarctica the sunlight won't upward push in any respect - and on the South Pole it won't upward push back till September 21st (approx). some international places declare that areas of Antarctica belong to them. in case you exclude Antarctica, Chile is the furthest south of any united states - although being see you later and skinny there'll be a great difference between the north and south of the rustic. in case you wanted to cover the entire united states, the main southerly might quite be New Zealand - its northernmost factor is larger south than the northernmost factor of the different united states (till you incorporate the samll Pacific islands whioh are suitable to New Zealand - wherein cse it would be Uruguay
