Will I be able to manage using a Mac?

I have owned a PC for a long time years ago I did use an Apple at work - then they went to PCs too. Since I've never used a Mac I was wondering how hard it would be to change. I play MMOG (massively multiplayer online games) and I understand that the graphics on a mac is so much nicer.

What difficulty will I have to face?

What should I be aware of before I purchase?

Any suggestions as to which Mac I should purchase? Not that I'm going to do that anytime soon.

Thanks for all the answers I know I'll be getting.

Your game playing will be reduced unless you use Boot Camp to install Windows.

The only difficulty you are likely to face is the 2-4 weeks it will take to become accustomed to the differences in the Mac.

If you have a need to work with Microsoft Office files, you will need to decide what applications to get.

For 100% compatibility, the Mac version of Office is the best choice. Like the Windows version, it is pricy. You might qualify for the student version, which is $150. I've never heard of anyone having to proof they qualify.

The option is Apple's iWork which will open all Office files except those using some of the esoteric features of Office. iWork comes with Pages, for word processing; Numbers, for spreadsheets; and Keynote, for presentation. iWork does not open Office files directly. It creates its own version of the file. When you save it, the file is saved to iWork's native format. To save if for Office, you will have to "Save As ..." and then select the option you want. By aware that iWork has more layout features than Office and you will have to keep your iWork files simple in order to export them to Office format without losing the appearance of the file.

The third option is Free Office. This is a free application that lets you open and edit Office files. I've played with it a bit, and find it awkward to use. But if free is the right price for you, give it a try. You might like it more than I.

Another thing to consider (even if you decide to get a PC) is external storage. You need to get an external drive that is at least twice the capacity of the internal drive. Use this drive exclusively for backup. If you do this, you will have become one of the elite 1% of computer users who never have to complain that they lost all the data to a hard drive crash.

Which model to get really depends on what you are going to do and what you need of the computer. If you are not going to do anything serious, and don't portability, the Mini is worth a look. If you need a bit more power than that, look at the iMac. If you are doing major stuff lie video editing, sound design, 3D design, get the MacPro. There is no home computer with more power than a Mac Pro, but it's comes with a price tag. If you need portability, then the MacBook or MacBook Pro are good choice. I don't suggest the MacBook Air unless you need that form factor.

I don't really know how to use a Mac, but I've had to use them a couple times on my college campus when taking a class in a classroom equipped with only Macs instead of PCs. I think they are very confusing for someone who is used to PCs, but I've heard that people who own Macs love them.

I suggest getting a book out from your local library to help you get to know how the Mac works. Also, ask a librarian if they are aware of any free or low-cost introductory "how-to" classes, or if they could recommend any other places to check for such classes. Maybe a local computer store would have suggestions too. Can't hurt to ask!
