Need help. Fish died in less than 12 hours of us getting them.?

Santa brought us a really small 1.5 gallon tank with a filter and air pump. We set it up Christmas day, with the water tablets to get it ready for the fish. We bought 2 neon fish at the store, and immediately dropped them into the tank when we brought them home. They didn't survive.

Without being mean to us and calling us fish-killers....anyone have some advice for what we did wrong?

The tank is only 1.5 gallons, so it doesn't have a heater. Also, I wonder if it could have been some sort of shock from putting them directly into our tank from the bag from the store. Please help. My 5 year old daughter is going to want to buy more fish tomorrow, but I want to make sure we don't kill anymore fish.

Please be nice if you are going to respond...I already feel bad about them dying. Thanks!

Update:

We did use some sort of chlorine removing stuff; we put that in yesterday and let it sit for 24 hours before we got the fish.

Based on your answers...it appears we probably shocked them by putting them in our tank too quickly...and also the water may not have been warm enough without a heater.

I think we'll try to see if there's a small tank heater at our local store. And, we'll take your advice on moving them from the bag to the tank.

Thanks all! Wish us luck!

The only fish that could live comfortably in that tank will be a betta, but even they need a heater and filter.

Neons can be rather sensitive fish. They need heated water. Did you dechlorinate the water? With any new fish, float the bag in the water for 10-15 minutes to get the temperature of the water in the bag the same as what's in the tank.

Get a betta fish to help make it easier for you as a new fish owner. Sorry about the loss, and I hope the betta works out better.

make sure your tank and filter have been running for at least 24 hours. In a tank that size I wouldn't put more then one fish in it. I also would not get a betta. I would get either a royken or a black moore. these fish can live at room temp. also leave the bag in the water for at least 15 min. and then add some of the water from the tank and let that sit open in the tank for about 10 min. then dump all the water from the bag into the tank and let the fish come out of the bag with the water. feed your fish when he gets in the water. do a 10 percent water change every 3 days and your fish should be happy.

P.S. i would also consider getting a 10 gallon tank because the smaller you tank is the harder ir is to maintain and the bigger you tank is the better and longer your fish will live.and make sure your home tempature is at least 65 F.

    1. You cannot just drop fish into tanks, as the change in temperature and water PH can send them into shock. You need to float their bag in the water for 15 mins, then add a cup of aquarium water for 5 mins, then slowly release them into the water.

    2. Neons need a heater, of 26 degrees celcius. (If you dont have a heater you can really only buy goldfish, all the other species will require a heater. Without a heater the fish will die.

3.Did you use water conditioner? or ager? If not the cholorine that is in tapwater would have killed them also.

Fish can die very easily from shock, from things such as being thrown instantly into water, being fed the wrong food, putting aggressive species in with timid species, not using water ager/conditioner. I think you really need to research fish owning before you purchase any more.

I would stick with goldfish, they are pretty hardy and its the only type you buy without a heater. If you decide to purchase a heater you can buy many more species, but because you seem new to fish keeping id try goldfish for a while. Tropical fish require checking the temperature daily, testing PH levels, Nitrate levels, cleaning of the gravel and usually blood worms and flake food.

when you have a fish in a bag don't just dump it right in the tank. if you do, it will shock the fish and kill it. let the fish float in the bag on top of the water in the tank for about 15-30 minutes before releasing it from the bag but don't take the bag out of the water. kind of tilt the bag down in the water so your fish can swim out of the bag into the tank.

Seriously, quit while you are behind.

A 1.5gal tank is practically useless. It will not support Neon Tetras or any other normal tropical fish. If the water temp drops below about 20C, they die anyway.

A good beginner size tank is 15-30 gal.

Putting more fish into that 'tank' is just going to result in more dead fish. A heater wont help in the long term.

Keeping fish is a learning experience and we all have to start somewhere. Unfortunately, many people keep trying over and over without really learning from their past experiences. All fish will eventually die but the challenge is to see how long you can keep your fish alive, healthy and happy.

Since fish live in water, it is helpful to learn as much as you can about water chemistry. Tap water usually has chlorine added to it to make it safe for people to drink. Even small amounts of chlorine can kill fish because it paralyzes the gills and makes it impossible for the fish to breathe. Using chlorine neutralizer in tap water before putting fish in it will prevent this. Liquid chlorine neutralizers are fast acting and inexpensive.

Don't assume that just because a fish is small it will be happy in a small home. Some fish will grow to be many times the size you see them in the pet shop. Some fish are hardy but others are very delicate. If you don't know which are which you should buy your fish from someone who does know. Some stores have clerks who don't know anything about fish while other stores have experts. It's easy to find the experts. They have people waiting in line to ask them questions.

The water temp. was prob very different from the water in the bag. If you are going to buy another fish though; get a beta mine last for 5 years.... but if you want to get more than 1 make sure if you put them in the same tank there is a divider in the middle.

I have to be quite honest with you. A 1.5g is the worse thing that you could put any fish into but I am sure that the reason that you purchased one was an economical factor. With that being said, I would recommend at least switching to a 5g tank instead.

Neon Tetras are very tricky to take care of and are actually recommended for aquarist with intermediate experience in caring for them. I would recommend Cardinal Tetras instead and get a school of six.

tank need to be cycled and water needs to be treated with water conditoner, tank takes weeks to cycled and you will need to buy water test kits to keep eye on ammonia and nitre level they are very toxic to fish.

    neon needs heater too

Don't drop fish in tank immediately it will shock the fish with water change out of suddenly. Once your tank water fully cycled, go buy fish and leave the fish bag floating on top of tank water to help the fish to get used new water to adjust for 15/30 mins then you can let fish go into tank

  • when ever you get new fish, NEVER put them immediately in. why?

#1 the temperature must be the same cuz say we are inside in the nice warm heat. when we go outside in the coldness wouldnt we be freezing?

#2 the fish need to get ready for their new enviorment.

so the best thing to do is to put the bag the fish came from in the tank for 10-15 minutes.
