Does a poem need proper grammar to be worthy?

(tongue in cheek to a question posted on another site bemoaning the lack of grammar, etc. in poems being posted)

Poet Speak

Oh…treacherous trail, teach us truth

Make our feet trod your sacred ground

Let us see your divinity

Punctuate words with proper ways

Syntax us to death to reveal

dependent clauses that don’t belong

Reject the phrase that speaks to all

if a comma’s gone or slang wails

Begin again to diagram

For we must measure the grammar

and disregard the words that speak

else we may never grow as poets

Update:

Good answer hp, but you need more punctuation! Now go to the back of the class!

so you say, today's the day

    you have something

    important to say

    well get it out

    don’t hesitate

    but please, oh please

    do punctuate

offer a passage, packed with drama,

or a snippet to tell, of the comma

perhaps a tale, of words stolen

    left unnoticed, without a colon

a simple poem, to tell your station

with wise words, worthy of quotation

or a subtle song, singing the praises

    of seldom used, hyphenated phrases

a piece filled, with energy kinetic

wrapped in hands, holding you parenthetic

something golden, hidden in your stash

with whimsical words, joined with a dash

tell of sweet Love, covered in kisses

held in pauses, with well used ellipsis

cool blue passion, set off in the dark

wonder left hanging, with a question mark

so if today, is the day

    for you to say

    something your way

    do it with style

    make it sound great

    but please, oh please

    do punctuate

I'm hanging on to my sense of humor,

as I read Neonman, and all these answers

clever words, dots and dashes and etc.

Feeling over my head and at a loss to

expess, what, how, where. just make it clear

is all I hope for, But how I do, I do, so enjoy

the Masters! here and in the olden books.

Good morning, Neonman, and a belated holiday greeting to you! Fun writing this morning. I love HP's response, too. I try to punctuate, but, with my high school education fails me sometimes as does my memory.

...grammar should be a beacon, much like a lighthouse to a poets words...a guide, nothing more...it should be an inconspicuous bodyguard that adds to the experience...there are exceptions...Black Mountain Poets, for example, who have written works that reflect mountain jargon and these works are phenomenal

The poem should be how the poet talks day to day.. or how the character in the p[oem would talk.

i believe poetry is a form of expression... i say feel free to punctuate however you like... emily dickinson... a very popular poet... used a lot of hyphens and other techniques in her poetry and ended up created her own style... be creative and enjoy yourself...

    Ahahhaha....

    That "tutto poesia" site

    is more boring

    than shopping at Ross.

    Comma, quotation

    period at the end

    the slash on the tip

    will never mend.
