Is the Marlin 795 semi-auto .22LR rifle comparable in quality to the Ruger 10/22 .22 LR?

I am looking for a good .22LR rifle for use primarily as a target shooting rifle. There is a pretty significant price difference between the Marlin 795 (sells for just under $100) and the Ruger 10/22 (sells for about $200). Is there much of a difference in quality or accuracy between these two rifles? Is there any particular reason why I should not purchase the Marlin or why I should purchase the Ruger? By the way I already know that the Ruger is highly customizable and that this is considered to be an advantage, although I'm not really interested in spending any additional money to improve the rifle's appearance or accuracy. Is the Ruger 10/22 really worth the extra money or would I be just as well off with the Marlin? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

yes The Marlin 795 is a brand New 22LR, nickle plated ten round mags are a bit pricy but it comes with one.(Marlin been around longer than Ruger) it's a very good and reliable 22 LR, and so is the Ruger, the 795 Marlin is lighter and comes with synthetic stock and will last, it is 18 micro grooved barrel the Ruger does not have 18 groove's but non the less both great/ also ruger is harder to get sling's ,for the 795 has the most common eye holes so you can go to walmart or Big 5 or a gun store or on line and get a quick sling 2 for under $20.00 and the 795 has a rib built on the recicer so it will or so you can mount a scope without buying a picatanny or weaver rail , ruger you must add a rail.

Which is better, a Marlin 795 or a Ruger 10/22 is a debate will continue for a long time.

If you are only willing to buy one, get the less expensive one - Marlin 795.

If you want to put a lot of add-ons, the more popular one is I think the Ruger 10/22.

Can afford both ? Get both ! And have fun making a decision.

I've heard a lot of great things about Marlin .22's. Most sites I visit claim that it is more accurate, out of the box, than the 10/22 (I own two of those). Most advice I've seen says get the 10/22, like you said, if you like to customize, but if you just want to leave it as is, get the Marlin (usually referring to the Model 60). I'd get the 795, but I would read some reviews about it first. This is not tubular, like the Model 60, and I don't know if anyone has had any problems with the magazine or anything.

Quality wise both are about the same. As for accessories, the Marlin is next to nothing. The Ruger more than any other 22.

If you are shooting targets, you probably want a bolt action with a bull barrel. The only one under $200 is the Mossberg Varmint Plinkster 801 #37099, 37096, 37095 (which I shoot) or the 37092 (I'm not certain that's a bull barrel). http://www.mossberg.com/products/default.asp?ID=30

They are pretty good. So are some tapered barrel guns such as Marlin 925 and 981T Savage/Stevens 300 isn't bad. There's some Savage Mk II's that can compete well against Euro rifles 2-3x their price. If you got $400 for the Savage MK II BTV and another $200-400 for a good scope, you have one of the best shooting 22's at any price.

You like autoloaders... I have the Savage 64f goes for about $125-130. It will shoot better than an off the shelf Ruger any day. Better crown on the barrel seems to be the difference. I tried both. I am cheap too. http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/64F My main thing is air rifles, but I'm into rimfire too.

The Marlin semi-automatic rimfire rifles are good choices for target practice, plinking and hunting. They're already accurate (as good or better than stock Ruger 10/22's).

The question is, "Do you want to go shooting or do you want to spend a lot of money to make a Ruger even more expensive and then attempt to impress other people later by bragging about the amount of money you spent?"

I let the holes my Marlin Model 60 and Model 25 put in the target do my talking. ;-)

I've had a Marlin tubular magazine 22 for over thirty years and never had a problem with it. It'll literally drive tacks in at 25 yards and more. The only change I made on it was to put a larger scope on it to accomodate my aging eyes.
