Experienced mechanic for complicated question?

2002 Bonneville 3800 motor.

Battery ran down... replaced.

Fuel gauge computer thingy messed up... replaced.

Serpentine belt shredded, pulley froze... replaced.

Two days later the "check engine light" came on... again!

So now I'm thinking there's some common denominator in all of these things...

ANY IDEAS?

I've spent enough money replacing all these peripheral things and need to get to the bottom of this. I love this car, but this is getting old.

    The belt issue is pretty much isolated. The other three could easily be related - losing battery will take out computer memory and require resetting.

    I'm not saying that absolutely is the problem but they all would be related.

    You don't say what kind of shop has been doing the repairs. Even the best intentioned and well equipped general repar shop might not have the specialty tools needed.

    If you've been taking it to a general repair shop, take it to a dealer. Also give them a written history of what you've said here. Model-specific diagnostic programs and specialty tools are too costly for many general shops. you may have a dealer only situation.

    Sure...it's a GM, but it's not a Chevy.

    First. Why did the battery run down? Bad alternator?

    Why did the belt shred? Bad alternator?

    Check engine light came on. Bad alternator?

    Maybe you should check the alternator?

    Sure...It could be charging and all that, but if you have a bad rectifier, it could drain the battery and screw up all kinds of things.

    There is no common demoninator other than you are driving an almost 10 year old car with surely over 100,000 miles. A car is a machine. Parts do fail. It doesn't help that you are driving a GM vehicle during a time when their build and design quality was absolute junk and is why they are where they are now.

    need to run a scan but it most likely just needs to have check eng. lite reset from all the other problems.

    check alt for output and get reading on light

    take it to auto zone and they will scan it for free and tell you what is wrong with it, or even advance auto parts
