White Thoroughbred's?

So there was a question not long back about white quarter horses and that got me thinking about a few things. Here in Australia we have a very popular white filly who has just started her career in racing. Her name is The Opera House, very aptly named of course and she is a 3/4 sister in blood to a champion racehorse called Might and Power. Now with this filly comes alot of talk about white throroughbreds, and yes I know that they are called max white or max sabino's, she is yet to show any of the dark pathces though.

So there are atleast 2 distinct known Thoroughbred lines that carry this gene, and infact there is one Thoroughbred stud who has 5 generations of unbroken white horses. They just never get much talk as they are seen rarely and are not the best race horses. So my first question is do you know of any other lines, and is this the same for other breeds?

Do max sabino's have any problem in regard to the sun and UV light and getting burnt, as everytime I have seen her she appears to be extremly pink around the eyes and mouth, or is this just a natural occurence?

If you have a max sabino or know of someone who does, do they have any problem working them in the daylight? There are stories of these rare max sabino's being banned from track work in normal daylight hours as their colour caused the other horses to spook.

Also talking strictly Thoroughbred's registered to race are there any other rare colours that you have seen?

And of course any other interesting information regarding this topic is welcome.

Update:

Positive, all I know bout these 5 gens is they have quite a few cross's of The Terrach and Selene who are the known lines that carry the max sabino gene. And here is a picture of the filly in question - http://images.smh.com.au/ftsmh/ffximage/2009/07/03...

This was her in a barrier trial.

Update 2:

Ok sorry all 5 gens go back to one mare called Glacial, and these horses contain many crosses of The Tetrarch and Selene, the dam of Hyperion.

The max white sabinos are more prone to sunburn (but this can easily be avoided with proper care) and sometimes can get eye issues due to the pink skin around the eyes, but again, with proper care this is fine. They aren't any more prone to melanomas (skin cancer) than other colors.

I think it's ridiculous to ban them from racing during the day. If a horse doesn't spook at a gray, why would it spook at a max white? They are often very similar in color. And as long as the owner takes proper care of the horse, there will be no skin issues.

    There's a rabicano TB...

This guy is both a rabicano and a sabino

That is a TB! The color is called "manchado" and is thought to be caused by conditions in the womb, as it is only found in Argentina

This is just a grey, but he has a bloody shoulder mark which is quite interesting!

This is a palomino JC TB

This guy is called Catch A Bird, and he is thought to be a roan

All of those are registered thoroughbreds.

Horses with pink skin in any area are susceptible to sunburn in that area. Max white sabinos are rare, so no it is not common to have 5 generations of max white sabinos in a row. Are these all with the same dam?

Are you sure it is a max white sabino though? Because the creme gene is also present in TBs. So depending on his eye color/genes/foal turnout (palomino foals as apposed to chrome endowed/pinto foals), he could be a cremello.

The only reason I would think they would ban MWS's from working at the drack in the daylight would be because of their increased risk for sunburn. I've never seen nor heard of a horse spooking at a MWS or a Cremello. Although it is well known for some horses to pick on unusually colored horses in herd dynamics.

Why does it have to be white? No offense but looking for a horse based on color isnt a very wise choice. It will severely limit your search. Looking for a horse based on skills/personality is the best route. Now a white thoroughbred is extremely rare, unless you are referring to a light grey, which is somewhat common. I would recommend a Quarter horse, which tend to have a much calmer and laid back disposition, although there are thoroughbreds that are laid back, but for the most part there are more quarter horses that are calm. It is a smart choice to look for a gelding. You definitely dont wont a stallion, which can be dangerous, especially as a first horse. Mares tend to be temper mental, although it is somewhat of a generalization. Geldings tend to be the most consistent. I would say since it is your first horse to also include in your search for the horse to have a good behavior and a solid training background. Preferably as broke/trained as possible, maybe even bomb proof. Hope you find your horse!

There was another of recent times, here in Queensland, if I remember correctly. Much media at the time, but it went unraced. They are an oddity.

I can't really speak about horses, but as someone who is into a particular type of Bull Terrier, I've spent a lot of money on sunscreen over the years.

Hard to believe it's a Zabeel, out of a Star Way mare. I've had a look back through Carmina Burana's pedigree, and I can't see it. Zabeel's and Star Way's are usually well and truly stamped.

I love it when a throwback can run.

Howdy! Horses that have ANY white on them are susceptible to get sun burnt. With a true white horse (where the skin is pink and not grey) the area to get burnt is obviously where ever the sun hits. We had to keep our white QH under a tent for shows or he would get burnt pretty quick. Baby sunscreen is good for around sensitive areas like eyes and muzzle.

I'm not familiar with working with white TB racers, I would imagine some horses being wary or spooky of a bright white horse. But then again, if they have to race together then it doesn't make sense to keep them separated. Other rare colors are brindle's, champagne, etc. I love the Sabino look with eyeliner. Very flashy - for the pleasure pen.

    Good Luck!

Yes, horses with pink skin and white fur are very susceptible to sun burn but the pink around their noses and eyes is normal and it is just their skin showing through thinner fur.

As for white thoroughbreds there is a farm called 'true colours farm' that breeds coloured thoroughbreds for racing and pleasure. Their stallion is the first cremello thoroughbred in america. He's beautiful and always will produce palomino foals with a chestnut mare and all the rest will be palomino, buckskin or smoky black.

Here's the website - it's really interesting if you look at the genetics!

If the horse has been raced in a derby or at a race track do not buy the horse. From personal problems with a horse i had a TB that was raced a lot and one day i was riding her in a outdoor arena and she started to run with me - i think she thought she was on a track or something- and and she threw me off and tried to run the other horses of the arena and she came back to try to run over me...

But if the horse hasnt been raced BUY THE HORSE

    hoped this helped

    There are few roan TB

I think being white they be prone to sunburn leading to skin cancer.

Not all racehorses will bolt and toss you off. I ridden a few of them, 2 tried through me, one didn't, she was actual incrediable stubburn for a race and to make her canter, you needed to drop the rein to the buckle before she move into a canter, gosh she was the slowest thoroughbred i'd eveer ridden.

Yes you can have a whte TB

    http://www.equineline.com/registryincludes/images/...

and yes because of their light coloring they are more prone to getting sun burnt and getting skin cancer
