Is it getting fuel?? It would not hurt to listen for the fuel pump when you turn the key.
Source(s): I have a 98 Chevy S-!0, I just went over the 200,000 mile mark and every thing that could need replacing except for the motor I replaced. Just Check and see if its starving for fuel. - 6 years ago

you have an air leak in the intake system when you disconnect the MAF sensor the ecu goes to emergency (get you home) mode with a slightly faster idle and a richer mixture, if it suddenly goes faster with the richer mixture then you likely have an air leak, maybe a stuck cold start valve, could be a dirty throttle valve/body which is preventing the butterfly valve from completely closing, you get a ring of oily sludge round the edge of the valve

Try adjusting your idle a little bit.
Easy way to check and see if that is the problem is to hold the throttle open a little while connecting the MAFS. If it runs then you'll have to adjust your idle a little.
