Is medical billing a good industry to get into?
And what is better to do...on-line courses or go to school? And what is better, a certificate or degree and how long does it take to finish the classes (typically)? I have checked on-line courses already but want to make sure I don't get ripped off. Anybody know any good schools?

Online courses are totally acceptable for medical billing and coding, since many jobs in this field will allow you to work remotely. Personally, I'd recommend getting a certificate and then spending your time actually working... instead of spending all that time and money on a degree and then having zero work experience at the end of it. Your other option would be to go to a job board (craigslist, monster, etc), search for medical billing and coding jobs, and then look in the job requirements to see what kind of education levels they're looking for.

Hello M*iss V*amp,
Being a medical biller and medical billing business owner I can tell you for a fact that medical billing in an office environment or as a business is a lucrative field. However I want you to understand that medical billing should only be a stepping stone for you if you are going to enter this industry (your next step should be toward becoming certified in medical coding – that's where the real money is).
Online vs offline = Well this is usually a personal decision but I will say that since you are only looking to do medical billing right now then taking a good online medical billing course will give you the proper training and save you time/money compared to a traditional school.
Certificates, Degrees and Certification = Since medical billing is not a specialize profession (like medical coding) there's no need to go 2 or 4 years trying to earn a degree. Certificates are usually given once you complete any type of training so that's not big deal. However if you want to put yourself above and beyond your potential competition then earning national certification is the way to go.
Completion Time = that will vary according to where you are receiving you education through. The online course that I recommend to those that come to me for medical billing advice is self paced and will take between 2-8 weeks to complete depending on how much time and devotion you put into finishing it. I'm not going to try and sell you on the course but instead I am going to give you the link to my mentor so you can see what a true expert has to say about picking an online medical billing course (link included under my signature)
I wish you the best in 2010,
