The Outsiders book. Do you belive that this is appropriate for an 8th grader to read?
Given the violence and references to inappropriate activity in this book and the challenges that middle schoolers face w/ bullying, social acceptance, etc. Do you think this book is helpful or a hindrance? Society has changed so much since the time that this book was written, w/ more violence and advanced ways of menacing. I appreciate your comments.

I am in 8th grade and last year (7th grade) my class read the Outsiders.
I believe this is appropriate but me and my friends did not like it, i believe it is for more mature audiences...like people in high school.
I fail to see how the book is helpful.
My mother read this book in high school..
Some books we have read as a class are:
I am Regina- i don't believe this is appropriate for violence, language, content and sexual happenings...
5th of march-good and appropriate
Ashes of roses
Lyddie
Jacob have i loved -i actually liked this one

I am a freshman and my 8th grade language arts teacher read this book to the class and it does have lesson to learn in it! I did not feel that this book was even close to the amount violence and inappropriate behavior that some 8th grade students are faced with today!

Yes, I think it's fine. I read it in the 6th or 7th grade and loved it, even though I found it disturbing. I think it highlights the ridiculousness of such violence and doesn't glorify it. In the 8th grade, my history teacher made us read The Plague by Alberto Camus. Now THAT was inappropriate for an 8th grader!

Yes, I am in 7th grade and we read the outsiders as a class novel and we did projects such as book covers, vocabulary charts, and power points on them. We even watched the movie.

i understand what your saying, but i read it in 7th grade. it depends on if your comfortable with the 8th grader reading it. it does have a lot of violence in it, so i dont know if i would quite recomend it to an 8th grader.
