I would think that if your personal history [relationships, etc.] repeats itself, that is psychology, not history. The teaching of history has [thankfully] moved past the simple recitation of dates and events, and is more concerned with the explanation of causes and effects. Does history repeat itself? Yes, but that is a result of human psychology, not of a historical imperative. Someone once said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, and expecting a different result. We seem to be trying to prove the truth of that statement.

George Santayana wrote in 1905 that those who ignore the past are doomed to repeat it's mistakes. If you make the same mistakes over and over you will get the same bad results over and over. History repeating itself is a result of people refusing to learn it's lessons.

Way too often. My personal life does not repeat itself that much because I try to learn from my mistakes. Unfortunately we seem as a nation to not do this.
Here is a good historical website.
