What makes a person a friend, better yet, a good friend?

Being totally selfless. To be a friend you have to not think about you. You have to think about the other person. You have to try to give as much as you can without expecting anything in return.

Being selfless includes so many aspects to a friendship, such as listening more than expecting to be listened to, giving advice when its needed rather than always needing advice, and the list can go on forever. For example: If your friend beats you in something, you have to be happy and not think of yourself. Think of their happiness.

a person you know well and regard with affection and trust; "he was my best friend at the university"

ally: an associate who provides cooperation or assistance; "he's a good ally in fight"

acquaintance: a person with whom you are acquainted; "I have trouble remembering the names of all my acquaintances"; "we are friends of the family"

supporter: a person who backs a politician or a team etc.; "all their supporters came out for the game"; "they are friends of the library"

someone who understands.

someone who listens.

someone who gives you advice, the good and bad.

someone who can always make you laugh.

someone who you know you can turn to when your feeling down.

someone who always has your back, no matter what.

someone who knows after every fight you'll have, everything will be okay and you'll go back to normal again.

but to make friends, you need to be a friend. :]

No such thing as a perfect friend. But its always best to try and make people feel important and be attentive to their needs.

Being a good person makes them a good friend.

When he or she can empathise but not patronise. When he or she can lend a listening ear and are not afraid to speak his or her mind to you yet still hold you dear to him or her.
