Yamaha Raptor electrical problems... Hot battery wire...?
I've got a big bore 2001 Yamaha Raptor.
Just replaced the one-way starter bearing, and having problems getting the quad to fire. Not getting a continuous crank, but a pause between each stroke. I had not made any adjustments or changes when replacing the one-way bearing.
Before the old bearing went out, I had a problem with my positive battery cable getting hot.
I've done the following to diagnose the problem:
- Check for spark with the plug in, low / no spark.
- Check for spark with no plug in, great spark, and continuous crank.
- Replaced coil
- Replaced Battery
- Replaced cables
- Checked all connections and fuses
I just purchased a Grizzly battery, since it is a big bore and wouldnt hurt to have the extra cranking power. I have not used the battery yet.
Is there any good way to test the solenoid?
I do appreciate the help.
The engine has good compression, and the starter was replaced.
Could it possibly be the solenoid / relay?
Cranks and sparks great with the plug out, I will try the new battery.

Possible bad starter motor.
The battery cable gets hot because the starter motor is straining to run.
A pause between each stroke would be from a weak battery, bad starter motor, engine damage (piston or camshaft about to seize up).

Did you charge the battery over night with a trickle charger? Batteries dont always come right out of the box ready to install and the instructions are on the box. Did you battery just die and you replaced it? I am sure that the battery just died and all you need to do is charge it overnight. The battery will lose charge pretty quick if you dont drive it often because bikes have somewhat of an altinator which charges the battery just like a car. Auto shops will test your battery for free, you also can take it back cause most have a 90 day waranty and then try another battery.
