Garage door wont open?

My garage door wont open with the remote. If I press the button to open the door, it wont open automatically open but if I try to lift the door physically with my hands it opens right up. I hear the motor going as if it wants to open but it doesnt.

It does sound like the emergency release as William stated ….sometimes when they are pulled they stay in the release position …..

Go inside the garage …start the door and see if the catch moves ….if it does, pull on the string a time or two until it goes back in the correct position….. then open the door manually and push it into the mechanism so locks, and you will be good to go

If the opener works, it sounds like you have a broken upper (1 or 2) spring(s) that offset the weight of the door. If a spring is broken, about $175 to have a professional replace. Doing it yourself can be deadly when applying the tension.

It can't be the emergency release. If it was, it would re-connect itself after 1 or two operations.

Check for a loose spring first, or something jammed in the rail, like a screw driver. Also, make sure someone didn't lock it as a goof.

My door is doing exactly the same thing.............i pressed button to open door, the motor runs as if its working but door wont open..........chain wasnt moving either and now i can just open the door with my hands......i will probably have to call out a repair guy.

I pulled down the manual release cord but nothing happens........the thing just pulls down and i push it back up.

Sounds like something is loose in the drive mechanism. Shut off power with door down. Check all parts for tightness and if it has a belt check it. If your not sure it is not that costly to have a door company make a service call.

If it is a chain-drive opener it might need tightening. If it is the spring above the door call a garage door company, because tightening that spring yourself can kill you.

check to see if the emergency release cord has been pulled,

if its released then the motor will not open it
