What do you call a male witch?

Depends on the tradition (& naturally fictional universes like D&D)

In Real Life, many prefer to be called Witch or Wiccan.

It's insulting to use Warlock as it means Oath Breaker.

The term "witch" applies to both sexes. The idea that a warlock was a male witch is a Christian invention, the actual origin of the term is from the OE "waerlogge" = "oath breaker" and has never been used by Pagans except as an insult.

Warlock means "oath breaker" and in my books, that's an insult.

Wizard *could* be used but it's so ingrained with fiction (for example, I cannot help but think of games and Harry Potter) that it's almost laughable to use it.

Mage also is an appropriate term which is once more loaded with fiction (World of Warcraft anyone?) and it also denotes something along the lines of a magical "scholar" or degree rather than active practitioner.

A witch...never a warlock unless you mean to insult him. Warlock is from the Scottish word for oathbreaker. Witch comes from the Old English words for wise woman (wicce) and wise man (wicca) and because the word witch drops the final syllable of the Old English wicce and wicca, no gender is specified. Witch is completely gender neutral.

Edit: And the "cc" in both wicce and wicca is not pronounced "k" but "tch". It is weetchay and weetchah.

A witch is a witch is a witch, male or lady. yet in many circumstances people who think of they understand call male witches, Warlocks. To me there's no distinction because they the two do the same ingredient. upload: To whitey: no longer all Wiccan are Witches, Wicca is a polytheistic faith the place Witches could be any faith (or none) even Christian! you do no longer choose Deities, GOD, or Demons (a basically Christian concept) to artwork magic.

According to Wiccans I know, a WITCH is a WITCH no matter what the sex is. WARLOCK, as popularized in the 1960's tv show BEWITCHED is considered an insult, seeing how WARLOCK is from the Scottish, meaning OATH BREAKER or TRAITOR. Not sure about WIZARD, though. I'll stick with WITCH.
