Math Problem Help Please!?

Maria paid 80 cents each for some packages of cards. She sold all but 18 packages for $2 each, making a profit of $48. How many packages of cards did she buy?

I don't simply want the answer--could somebody please explain to the steps I need to take to determine the number of packages there are? I'm having trouble figuring it out...

Thank you!

    2.00 - .80 means each profit is 1.20

    48/1.20

    40 packages would give her the profit but she also lost .80 on 18 packages.

    So, she had to sell 18 more packages to even out her expenses.

    40+18

    Looks like 58.

    Let x = the total number of cards Maria bought. Then....

    .80 (x) = the total amount paid for the cards.

    She sold all but 18 packages for $2 each ......

    $2 (x - 18)

    Making a profit of $48 .......{the difference between what she sold them for and what she paid} ----->

    $2 (x - 18) - .80 (x) = 48 --->

    2x - 36 - .8x = 48 ..........{multiply everything by 10} ----->

    20x - 360 - 8x = 480 ------>

    12x - 360 = 480 ------>

    12x - 360 + 360 = 480 + 360 ----->

    12x = 840 ----->

    12x/12 = 840/12 ----->

    x = 70

    ......Maria bought a total of 70 packs of cards.

    so in other words every pack of cards she sold she gained a profit of $1.20 so that makes it a hell of a lot easier so now how many times does it take for that to get to $48 then add that number buy 18 and there you go you got the answer but the answer is as far as i could get is 58 packages that she bought hope i helped enough

    She sells the packs for $2, but bought them for $0.80 so makes $1.20 per pack.

    If X is the total number of packs she bought, then she sold (X-18) packs because she had 18 left over.

    For each of these (X-18) packs sold she earned $1.20 profit, and $48 in total.

    So (X-18) * 1.20 = 48

    Divide both sides by 1.20 leaves:

    (X-18) = 40

    so X = 58

    She bought 58 packs in total

    The 2nd answerer dropped a negative sign when he re-arranged the equation.

    I always work it out backwards here is how I would do it.

    Profit = $48

    How do you find profit

    $48 = profit per pack * (Total packages - 18 (unsold packages))

    $48 = 2.00 - .80 * (x - 18)

    $48 = $1.20*(x - 18)

    Distribute the $1.20

    $48 = $1.20x - $21.60

    $26.40 = $1.20x

    x = 22 packs SOLD

    Packs sold + packs unsold = Total

    22 + 18 = 40

    40 total packs
