Can movie theaters stop you from bringing soda, popcorn, candy and other stuff to eat in the theatre ?

Every time I go to the movies I take all my drinks, popcorn, candy and other stuff to eat. Is this legal ? With the prices theaters charge for all the stuff they sell there this is the only way I can afford to go to the movies !

Update:

If the theater goes out of business because I don't buy their overpriced and totally outrageous popcorn, sodas, then it's too bad. They need to be more competitive in their pricing. They make more than 10 % of the price of the ticket.

Their popcorn should be illegal. It was voted one of the worst foods to eat!

Charging $8 for a bag of fluff covered in liquid cholesterol is criminal if you ask me.

    Actually,

Most of these posts are wrong. From a legal perspective, the movie theater is in the business of providing movies. It is not a restaurant. It is not illegal to bring in food. They don t like it, but legally, they cannot stop you from doing it. If food was not offered at all at the theater, then they could prohibit food all together. Since they do not prohibit it, then they cannot stop you. If they try to stop you, tell them you are going to sue them as legal precedent has already been decided on this issue.

Yes, it is legal. However, the movie theater has every right to make you leave.

I actually stopped eating stuff at the movie theater years ago. It's just a bad habit. You don't need all of that to watch a movie.

it is not illegal.if there is a sign up,then make sure you bring a lady with a large purse to put all of your snacks and drinks in them.my family and i have been doing it for years with no issues.we buy food before coming and put it in our large purses and go on in.they have never searched us walking in any theater.then we take the stuff out after we are seated and enjoy it.i refuse to pay 5.00 for a 20oz bottle of water or any drink.or 6.00 for some candy or fruit snacks that i can get a box of for half the cost.their prices are horrible and pointless.i used them so few times i can count it on my hands.lol.they know if they charge the prices some silly people will pay for it,thats why they continue to do it.

They can't search your purse or anything, but if they catch you eating or drinking something, they can make you leave the theatre. I personally think the prices they charge are ridiculous, so I sneak in small bottles of water or pop in my purse. I usually don't eat at the theatre.

yes they can stop you. you aren't supposed to bring your own stuff because then they lose out on money. so hide it very well. -i do this. nothing too bad about bringing my own candy bar. i have a purse so it's easy to hide. but you.. i think you will draw a lot of attention if you walk in with your own tub of popcorn and so on.. so at least be smart about it. if they catch you they will ask you to leave.

Yes, my son is very picky about his candy he carries it in his coat pocket they usually do not mess with a handicapped child. BQ: He likes Squirt to drink and his candy of choice varies so whatever he picks that day just not something that sticks to his teeth and not suckers and no chocolate.

The theater does not get to keep 100% of your movie ticket price. as a matter of fact they get to keep very little of your admission. Most theaters keep @ 10% of your admission price.the rest goes to Hollywood the only way they are able to stay in business is to sell concessions. Granted they do charge quite a bit for these items. the question you have to ask yourself is this. if the theater you go to closed down because no one was buying any concessions and they could not pay their bills how would that affect your movie going experience?

everyone tells me yes so i just hide it in my purse or pockets ;)
