What would be the best engine to put into a 1968 or 70 Dodge Charger?
The Fast and Furious car was supercharged, but no need since I am looking more at a weekend car... but if i had a drag racer, i would probably put in a supercharger...
Well, I was thinking (for a furture reference if I ever get a Dodge Charger) what would be the best engine to put inside of it. I actually have never really driven an 8-cylinder car besides a jaguar and I was wondering which engine should I put into it if I were to restore it. I was thinking about a HEMI because I heard people love it and apparently it is a big seller on the auction block. But maybe if I put in another engine I could get a bit more horsepower. But does that extra horsepower matter... What would be the best if it was a drag racer like the dodge charger in the Fast and Furious movie? What would be the best for a weekend cruiser?
How much horsepower are these engines putting out too?

for future reference go with a good 440 ,you can get more horse power from one of those engines than you can a hemi, and they hold up a lot better also, and are easier to find when you decide to buy one or do this, good luck.

The Viper engine (and transmission?) is longer than the 440 and fiercely expensive. You'll need to cut the body to get the engine in the engine bay. It would be a lot less trouble to buy a crate 426 Hemi and a B&M Torqueflite with a Megashifter. There are a lot of performance options for the Hemi that can increase the power output. Then you need to get all this power on the ground with a limited slip differential and some decent tires. You have unlimited funding, of course?

If you want to do what they did in the Fast and the furious, thn you should go to INDY ENGINES. you can have any motor you want witch is limited only by the budget, Small blocks start at 7 K and a top of the line Siamese bored 792 cu in alchol motor tops out at 35 k but it is ready to run. Not very streetable though. but you will get there first. (Ps the 792 is a 440 block bored stroked and decked with a hemi head conversion on it, 3400 hp with a dyno slip. a factory 440, with an edelbrock 750cfm and a little cam (.500 lift at valve or better ) should net you about 460hp at the wheels with 1 7/8" headers with a fresh tune up on premium fuel

If you got 10k Chrysler does sell the 426 Hemi as a crate engine, that would be the premier choice. Other wise, any Chrysler engine, big block or small block will have plenty of power and grunt. Personally i would go with the new Mopar 5.7L (348 cid) Hemi crate engine. Its available in either carburated or fuel injected, has close to 400hp, and gets descent gas millage and emissions.

The 426 hemi. I think the F & F car was supercharged. 440 six pack is next, and more rare.

If you want to make the value of the car as high as possible keep it original. Matching numbers are worth more than performance at a collector car auction. If the original engine is not available the best choice is a 426 hemi with dual 4 barrel Holley carbs. Set it up with what we used to call a 3/4 racing cam, hooker headers and dual thrush mufflers.

if money is not an object i would go with a hemi. you can get a new crate engine from mopar or try to find a used one. either way its going to cost$$$. If you have a budget in mind i would go with the 440. you can build these real good and fast and in many cases better.

The 426 Hemi is rated at 425hp, but the guys on i think Powerblock built the old GM, Ford and Chrysler engines to the exact specs as they did back in the day. They put em on a dyno and the Hemi had closer to 800hp.
next best; 440magnum
