  • What's your favorite carnival ride? Amusement park ride?

For carnivals mine has been the zipper for the last 40 years. Himilaya and tilt-a-whirl are two other old favorites.

I haven't been to an amusement park for so many years I can't name a favorite. Amusement park rides can be bigger, faster and more elaborate than carnival rides because they are permanently installed. The portable nature of a carnival ride limits their size. That's why I separate them in my question.

  • What's a good small SUV for tall driver?

I am considering a small SUV and need something with leg and foot room. Being 6'3" tall with size 15 feet these are real issues. I have modified seat mounts to get needed leg room but I can't do much to gain room formy big feet, especially when wearing winter boots. I have driven a Toyota RAV-4 and the driver's ergonomics were too tight for me. Would a Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Nissan Xterra be a better choice? Maybe something from another manufacturer? Chrysler minivans have served my purposes quite well but something with more ground clearance would be better. My needs include comfort, fuel economy, traction in snow and mud, clearance, cargo space and able to tow a lightweight boat or snowmobile trailer.

  • What are your favorite greens and how do you like them prepared?

My favorites are from brassicas, especially rutabagas and turnips. I cook them by briefly steaming just until they are wilted, but not really cooked. Then I finely chop some salt pork and garlic and fry it until the prok is crispy. I add a little olive oil to the pan and heat it, then add the greens and sautee them until they are cooked and the flavors blend together.

I like most greens and I use them in soups, casseroles and salads. If I continue down the list from most to least favorite the next would be horseradish, then collard, broccoli, chickory and dandelion, amaranth and quinoa, and tying for last is spinach, beet and chard

  • What is a good web site to watch unedited episodes of South Park?

I used to watch them on southparkstudios.com but it ends up buffering more than anything. I would leave it alone on pause to buffer the whole show but it will only store 12 seconds of viewing. Is there anyplace else to watch South Park that doesn't bleep out the f-bombs and other language?

  • Red currants vs. black, which is better eating?

I am getting ready to plant some more edible landscape shrubs and currants are on my list. The varieties I have available are Consort Black and Perfection Red. Can anyone tell me the differences besides color?

  • What variety of shallots is least likely to bolt?

Last fall I planted Sante shallots. They came up like they were supposed to this spring and each one made 4-5 nice big bulbs but every one bolted in June. Is there a different variety that is bolt resistant?

  • Do you leave a tip at a food truck?

There is an article on Yahoo today about a food truck worker who was fired for tweeting about not getting a tip. I understand the firing. You don't earn repeat business when you berate customers in a public forum. Do you tip food truck or fast food workers? I tip a waiter who takes my order at the table and brings my food when it is ready but if I have to carry my food from the counter nobody gets a tip. Where do you draw the line on tipping?

  • Does anyone cook sugar snap peas?

I just picked the last of this year's sugar snaps from the garden and I realized that I have never cooked any in the 7 or 8 years I have been growing them. They are so sweet and tasty raw that none have made it to the pan. Is this unusual?

  • Do you eat frozen grapes?

I froze some by accident. They went in the wrong door when I was putting away groceries. I decided to eat them and now I freeze them on purpose. It's like grape popsicles without any artificial colors, flavors or added sweeteners

  • Do you practice doing things with your "off" hand? What do you do and are your reasons?

As a lefty I do a lot with my right hand. My reasons are:

If I ever injure my good hand I won't be helpless.

It develops muscles on both sides of my body meaning less back pain.

Ergonomics. Some things are easier to reach and some tools are designed for right hand use.

Maintaining coordination and balance as I grow old.

    I simply like being ambidextrous.

Some things I do with my opposite hand are painting including detailed trim, using most hand and handheld power tools, eating, writing notes to myself, using kitchen knives and utensils, household chores like lifting, cleaning, etc.

  • What bird lays the best tasting eggs?

I have eaten chicken, guinea, pheasant, goose and turkey eggs. Of these species I thought guinea eggs made the best omelets, scrambled and fried eggs. Chicken and pheasant eggs were better hard boiled. I wasn't impressed with goose eggs but I understand they are good for baking. I haven't done enough baking to form an opinion. What kind of eggs do you think are best in different recipes?

  • Why aren't kitchens designed with space for a freezer?

People place their freezer in inconvenient spots like the cellar or garage. I think it would make more sense if the kitchen had a stand alone refrigerator (no built in freezer) and a separate upright freezer right beside it. Food storage and food prep should be close together.

  • Why doesn't anyone make an electric lawn tractor or heavy duty mower?

I know there are some light duty battery and plug in electric mowers but nothing suitable for large lawns. I would like to see a battery powered 48" walk behind mower deck or a zero turn mower. It seems like a good way to promote electric vehicles. Equipment like this could give people enough confidence in batteries to consider electric cars.

  • Has anyone built a diesel powered Porsche?

I have a chance to buy a Porsche 924 with no engine and no rust. The rest of the drivetrain is in good shape. I was thinking about installing a VW or Audi diesel engine. Does anyone know if it will bolt to the bellhousing without much modification? If that much is compatible I can make the rest of it fit. Would a different diesel be a better fit? I don't care if I use an Isuzu, Nissan or even a Perkins or Kubota engine. I just think it would be cool to drive a biodiesel powered Porsche.

  • Have you grown sand cherries? Are they sweet enough to eat fresh?

I want to grow some fruit but regular sweet cherries won't make it in my plant zone. Are sand cherries good to eat or are they too sour?

  • Are high school sports dying?

The school in my town did not have a baseball team this year because only 7 boys wanted to play. Another school 50 miles away didn't have enough players for a boy's hockey team last winter. They had enough players for the girl's team. Is this a nationwide trend? Are boys learning that sports are stupid and a waste of time?

  • Is the government wrong to push food stamps on people who don't want them?

People in rural appalachia have been bullied by welfare workers into applying for food stamps. Many of these proud people grow, hunt and forage for much of their food. Their income might be low but they are not going hungry. Should they be coerced into accepting government assistance they don't want?
