Why aren't kitchens designed with space for a freezer?

People place their freezer in inconvenient spots like the cellar or garage. I think it would make more sense if the kitchen had a stand alone refrigerator (no built in freezer) and a separate upright freezer right beside it. Food storage and food prep should be close together.

Update:

If architects would plan for it when designing the house it wouldn't be a space issue. The space issue only occurs when you try to add a freezer into a kitchen that wasn't designed to have one.

If you are having a house designed then consider a pantry area. A nicely designed pantry will be adjacent to your kitchen and contain additional cabinets, a sink, and sometimes a free standing freezer or additional refrigerator. I build and re-model many kitchens and stand alone freezers are almost always incorporated into a pantry area if the customer wants a lot of additional freezer space. Sometimes the additional refrigerator is the only additional freezer space they need and the frig space is used to store bulk beverages, etc.

Maybe they don't design freezer space into kitchens because while everyone has a refrigerator, not everyone has a separate freezer and if they do, not everyone wants the same size freezer.

Upright freezers aren't as efficient as chest freezers, because when you open the door of an upright, cold air tends to flow out the bottom because cold air sinks. With a chest freezer, the cold air stays in better so you lose less of it every time you open it. An upright wouldn't be my first choice.

I think its because of the space they take up. It would be convenient to have my freezer in the kitchen, but it would take up a big chunk of valuable cabinet space. I think for most people, a freezer is a place for long term food storage, not something they need to get in to for every meal or even every day. I guess that's why freezers are usually found in out of the way spots likes garages and basements where space isn't at a premium.

Stand alone freezers are typically meant for long term storage. Basements are much cooler than first floors so the freezers run more efficiently. While many people put them in garages, it isn't always the ideal location, especially in hot climates.

There is always space and time for improvement. The best place in the whole world is the room of improvement. It speaks much about you. It matters not whether the improvement is done to your self being or to your personal possessions. To make your kitchen clutter free, give a contract to the professional designers or a company who have experts in this field of artistic designing and remodeling. Any good firm would give first priority to the problems of space.
