Are high school sports dying?

The school in my town did not have a baseball team this year because only 7 boys wanted to play. Another school 50 miles away didn't have enough players for a boy's hockey team last winter. They had enough players for the girl's team. Is this a nationwide trend? Are boys learning that sports are stupid and a waste of time?

Update:

Ashley, answering your question, I'm not sure how many high school students attend my local school. There are 200 kids in the whole school system, grades K-12. Last year's graduating class was 16. Most years it's about 20. The high school that canceled boy's hockey usually has 500-600 students in grades 9-12. Other schools of similar size have dropped football in recent years.

It think it's probably just in your area. In most places, high school sports are huge and more competitive than ever. Our school always has tons of people trying out for every sport. I'm curious, what part of the country do you live in? Is it a rural area, suburban or in a big city?
