'howling' sound - 2003 ZX2?

Hi - what would cause a 'howling' noise on a 2003 ZX2 (38K miles)? It's noticeable when accelerating at low speeds (up to 30mph), and sounds like it might be coming from the back of the car. Thanks!

    Buz,

Jenny has a very good point but there is a way to test it.

Get the car up on jackstands, and with the car suspended with them what you can do is grab the top and bottom of a tire, and then try and wiggle it. When a wheel bearing goes bad it will usually have lateral play in it (you can shake it back and forth or up and down.

If for some reason the wheel is able to be shook back and forth or up and down even slightly, there is play in the bearings and should be replaced. I would do the same on the front.

Remember, it's a frontwheel drive vehicle and the zx2 has nothing back there to be rotational other than the bearings and the rest of the pieces that go with it. It's a very basic setup, so there's only so much it can be.

It is possible it could be a bad tire as well, but check for bearing play first.

Do you know when the last time the bearings were packed would be?
