Is it possible to still buy a new printer and use refillable ink in the cartridge?
I bought a Lexmark printer and it won't allow me to print another sheet of paper. I found out that there is a chip, that works like a counter, and when it hits the magic number of prints, no matter what you do, it won't print another sheet. I contacted their support and they won't guarantee that the 28A or 29A won't have a chip that will cut off printing as well.
I couldn't of guessed that I could spend over $180.00 on a printer and get locked into an "contract" that I will only buy ink from the Lexmark. They have their ink cartridges so locked down you can't get around it. Nowhere was this stated on the box, I wouldn't of bought it had I known.
I want to hear from people who have bought a new printer recently, within the year, and are able to use refillable ink in the cartridges without hassles. So, if this is still possible please give me the name of the printer manufacturer and the printer series. Thanks.
My question is...
Is it still possible to buy a printer that allows you to use refillable ink? Please give me the name of the printer manufacturer and the printer series. Thank you.

Canon printers will let you use refills. I believe HPs do as well. Whatever you do do not get an Epson as you will have the same problem as Lexmark.
If you buy a Canon that uses CL1-8 and PGI-5 cartridges (too many to name) you can buy a chip re-setter that re-sets the ink levels so the printer thinks it's running with a new cartridge. I have the Canon MP610 and have not bought a new cartridge in over a year!
This is what a re-setter looks like.
Edit
Again. Too many models to list. All cannon printers will work with refills but ones the CLI-8 PGI-5 cartridges have chip resetters available to show full ink levels!

Wow that's really unfortunate. From what you describe, I doubt refilling the cartridge will solve the problem. If there were a way to reset the chip, it might work. However, I own a Lexmark printer I bought a few years ago. It is all the time telling me "Your ink levels are low, please order new ink from Lexmark!" I can get at least 10 sheets out before I notice any difference.. Then I can still keep printing with slightly differing colors for several sheets after that. Seems to me like they're looking for more profit!

Refilling cartridges are simple enough, but at times refilled ink cartridges may work, but mostly not. Most printers will not recognize refilled ink cartridges. Once the ink is exhausted, the chip expires. Refilling them may be a costly gamble on your part. So to save you any grief, it may be advantageous on your part to just replace the ink cartridge

Canon, HP or Toshiba all allow refillable ink.
Lexmark is the worst - you pay next to nothing for the printer then pay through the nose for refills.

Check out that site, I got a Canon Photosmart - refill it all the time and save a fortune!

Lexmark just lost a lawsuit with Static Control Corp because they were not allowing their cartridges to be recycled and they were trying to create a monopoly. It will all be over soon, I assure you. =)
