That liquid gun blue is for very small dings - you will never be happy using it on a full sized part.

You can send the parts out for blueing. That is not a problem. However, it will totally ruin the re-sale price of the firearm.

However - you have other options. You can ceramic powder coat the parts - this finish is affordable and comes in 13,000 different colors. After the parts are powder coated they are heat treated - tough stuff - I have a suppressor I had ceramic powder coated and it looks like a factory finish.

Hi. To the best of my knowledge the Walther P-22 is not available in stainless steel, brushed or otherwise. Stainless steel is not a finish but a metal. The P-22 is carbon steel (at least the important parts like the barrel) with a Polymer frame. The P-22's barrel is finished in standard gun blue and the slide is available in: Blue finish; brushed nickel finish or some kind of shiny black baked finish. I opted to purchase my Walther P-22 in brushed nickel finish because I believe this is the nicest color combo for the little gun. The baked-enamel (I'm not sure its 'enamel') finish is probably the most durable followed by the brushed nickel. However, if I do buy a second P-22 which I may because I've learned that it is an extremely utilitarian little pistol I'll buy one in blue steel with the 5" barrel. Mine came with the 3" barrel and factory laser sight. I know I can just order the 5" barrel for mine but I'd rather keep mine as is and these little pistols are not expensive so another one might not be a bad idea. I'll be moving from the city to the country by next year (Lord willing) and these .22s are real handy for plinking and dispatching small vermin like snakes. You're getting a really nice little pistol regardless of what finish you finally decide on. Good luck. H

To "blue" a stainless steel pistol, Brownell's Oxynate 84 or Dulite's 3-0 salts would have to be used. Neither of these are do-it-yourselfer friendly.

Instead of buying a second pistol, why don't you just buy blued parts?

There are so many 1911 parts out there that you are sure to find (many) parts that look the same as your originals, and are blued.

ed: Yes, you can "blue" a stainless pistol, although the finish will be more "black." All steel rusts! Oxynate 84 is a hot job, not a cold blue. (Still not worth the trouble.)

Don't worry about mixing blued (carbon steel) and stainless, manufacturers do it all the time. Clean your weapon, use oil, and it won't rust away...

Longer answer:

Bluing is an oxidation process (glorified rust). Stainless steel is rust resistant, by definition.

Putting in blued carbon steel parts can cause other problems. Microscopic pieces of them may eventually embed in the stainless, providing a focus for corrosion. That's why you should never use a carbon steel brush on a stainless steel gun.

Good news:

You're not out of luck. There are lots of other finishes you can put on stainless, like phosphate and the various titanium nitrides. Plug gun finishes into Google to find more than you may want to know.

Plenty of great answers here already, so just allow me to add my two cents.

As the others have said, the liquid blue stuff looks really really cheap. It's fine if you have a very small little ding in the metal and want to merely touch it up. But for bluing entire parts, the liquid blue looks terrible.

Even if you bought a better item, the results are not going to be that great when trying to blue a stainless part. My advice, pure and simple, is to replace the parts with factor blued parts to get the desired results. I once owned a Colt Combat Commander in satin nickle with some blued parts on it, and it looked great.

in almost all cases no u cannot blue stainless. liquid bluing sucks. it stinks, offers no protection to the gun and looks cheap.

I dont think so, but that sounds like it'll be a beautiful gun finished
