Rescuers come in different methods, ways, shapes and sizes. Some were helped to escape into neutral or free territory away from Nazi occupied territory. Some were hidden or given false ID's until the war was over. Others like Oscar Schindler employed them in their factories as "Specialist workers" to save the from the Gas chamber

A rescuer was someone who tried to assist Jews or anyone that was hiding from Hitler. It could be the people who helped them escape from Germany and hid them is safe houses. Along the way they would have stayed overnight at someones house, or in their barn. Another rescuer would be the Allied Forces who marched into the Concentration Camps and helped the people in them.

Sometimes the rescuers were caught and probably killed by the Germans, but it still does not make them rescuers.

Whether they were caught, or weren't caught wouldn't change the rescuer status.

Possibly Pope Pius XII was the most successful of all the Holocaust rescuers, having established a system early and keeping it going throughout. But there's cause to think the Germans were either fully aware, or had an inkling of what the Vatican was doing. It didn't change anything or keep it from continuing.
