You can do what is called a 'price adjustment' to get back the $9.50 difference, and this will be refunded in cash. You do not need to return the item at this point just bring in the receipt and ask for a price adjustment. This will mean that you effectively bought the jeans for $39.89.

You know have the opportunity to exchange the item for another pair of jeans priced at $39.89

Alternatively, providing you have the receipt, you can return the item for the full price you paid and you will be given $49.50 in full. You can then purchase a new pair of jeans.
