How can I prevent my dogs from becoming aggressive towards cats?
I have a 10 month old pup who has grown up in a house of cats, the kittens being around the same age as him. because both the cats and dog have grown up togeather the cats are not afraid of dogs and he minds his manners with cats. The problem is my fiance has a 5 year old dog who attacked a cat when it was 6 months old. After surgery the cat recovered and is still alive and the dog has never attacked a cat since. Our vet told us he has a high prey drive and it was natural. Although it has been 4 1/2 years since he attacked a cat, I still do not leave him unsupervised with the cats and he has to be crated at night and when we are out of the house. My puppy still plays with the cats and will nuzzle them and cuddle them but the problem is when the cats get wound up and play with eachother, my fiance's dog seems to go into hunting mode with his ears alert and eyes focused on the cats. He rushes at them and will growl if they go into the kitchen (where the pet food is kept). How can I stop his behavoir and make sure his actions do not rub off on the puppy? He is a good dog and I do not want to rehome him, I just want to be able to have all my animals coexist happily and not have to worry about the dog attacking a cat or influencing the puppy to.

You can't fight mother nature.
Don't leave that dog unsupervised with your cats.
It's unlikely the pup will develop that behaviour as he already has a good relationship with the cats. Behaviours are learned when a dog is young ; this is what we call socialization .

You can't really make dogs like cats and make cats like dogs. How about trying to hold the cat and have someone hold on to the dog pet them both and have them close together but control the so nothing happens. If you treat them the same then they might be convinced they are loved equally and the dog might not be so aggressive. Maybe even try to have the cat food some where other then the kitchen. or separate there food places. I don't know why the dog is not so good around cats but this might help. Also when you leave the house put the dog outside and the cats inside or something to keep them apart. Hope I helped =)

You will have do introduce training with a 5 years old dog and your kittens. as your kittens are only 6 months, they kinda of too little to defend themself, they are still babies.
I had problem with introducing my 3 years old border collie when I bought 2 months old kitten. I kept my kitten in bathroom, and dog in kitchen over night, but one pet in a room with me at time and swap over so they get used the smells of their beds, toys then I have put baby safety gate on door and I put leash on my dog and allow my kitten to come in expolor the kitchen I tried to get my dog to sit quietly and lie down it seem to be impossibly to keep my dog calm down, she had high prey drive too. I was being firm with my dog telling her NO! when she tries to run to my kitten, my kitten hissed and ran away. It took me about 3 months to finally got them friends but still watched them never leave them out of my sights, when my dog is more settled down, my kitten was bouncy and attacks my dog's bum it sets my dog off she was chasing after my kitten as long as my kitten had somewhere to hide that where my dog can't reach. My dog finally leave my kitten well alone just after she had scratch on her nose by my kitten. NOW they are best friends!
Yeah it was really HARDESTintroducing training ever I have done but worth it!.
Maybe you try do this. Just keep 5 years old dog on leash till you feel ready better when kitten is abit older and old enough to defend for themselves

You can teach the dog to "leave it". You can find a lot of good, free training advice of this sort online. Just do a yahoo search.

try to associate cats with good things like treats and attention. You may need to get something like a shock collar or prong collar to snap him out of his fixation on the cats
