Could a tourist see most of Salem, MA and do shopping there in one day?

I'd like to know if I could see most of the historical spots and do some shopping in Salem, Massachusetts in just one day. Basically, I'd like to take a plane to Boston and then take a taxi to Salem in the morning so I can be in Salem when the stores and sites open and then head back to Boston to fly home after the stores' closing time in the evening.

Yes, it really is not that big a place. My wife and I went there several years ago and was done in about 5 hours, including the witch museum, that has a play that takes about 30 minutes. And we also went through the ancient cemetery in town. Salem is not next door to Boston, I would rent a car for a day.
