Student wage? I've never heard of that before.

The only way I've ever heard of being paid less than minimum wage is if it's in a job like a restaurant server or a hotel housekeeper, where it's expected that the employee will earn tips, to make up the income disparity.

Edit: There's a federal minimum wage, that aside from certain professions, every state must at least meet. Some states may set minimum wages that are more than the federal minimum wage, but not many.
