breaking overprotective dog behavior?

my dog is a female australian shepherd 1 1/2 years old.

my dog is overprotective toward dogs that get to close to me, my wife, or my neighbor. she won't try to fully attack the other dog but aggressively snip at the dog in an attempt to get them away. if she is by herself she is fine and she will even try and play with the other dogs.

i'm worried that one day she will try and aggressively herd the wrong dog and get hurt. so how do i break this?

Your dog is not protective. It is untrained.

It has taken on the leading role over you and your wife. You want to focus on that first. Start with GOOD obedience training and follow on with everyday activities with your dog.

If the dog knows that she is at the bottom of the ladder.. she will not take on this dominant role.

If you are unsure about how to carry this out and how to train the dog correctly... seek the advice of a good trainer.

Until you have this sorted, do not let your dog around others unsupervised and always keep her on a tight lead, preferably with a pinch/choke collar for immediate corrections whenever any aggressive behavior is displayed.

The owner of the dog needs to know how to "operate" the dog, same way you can get into a car that's in perfect running order but if you don't know how to drive you won't have much luck making the car go anywhere. If the owner doesn't know how to maintain the training, the dog will soon become untrained again. Read more here https://tr.im/trainingdog

People seem to think that once a dog is trained, that's it. Not true. You must reinforce the dog's training every single day in some way. It's best if the owner and the dog go together to get trained. As a professional trainer once said to me "We can train any dog in 2 days. It takes longer to train the owners

It may be caused because you haven't neutered your dog and because of this they become over protective.
