R&P : Any fans of Metal band Baroness? And a little 'Music Art' {for all R&P} question...?

Hello R&P :)

I just came across the American band Baroness, thanks to their great album cover art,

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/images/B001HAV8...

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/images/B002OVV1...

and wondered what you knowledgeable Metal fans could tell me about them. I read they are partially 'Prog-Metal', and quite liked the couple of clips I just heard {will be listening to more later}. So, favourite songs?

BQ : What bands have you discovered because of their album art?

BQ2 : Which ones did you like?!

BQ3 : Was the cover / album art a good reflection of their music?

BQ4 : Favourite fantasy artists, and maybe a piece of their work...?

BQ5 : Have any of them drawn album art?

Feel free to only answer the main Q or some of the BQs if that is all you wish to do.

Mine :~

BQ : Blackmore's Night {BQ3 : Yes, mostly}

BQ2 : What I meant was, when you discovered bands through the album art, did you actually like all those bands :)

They play a kind of somewhat progressive, sludge-inspired form of music. I have their newest album ('Blue Record'), and it is pretty good. They are a pretty critically-acclaimed band, with their latest album getting a perfect 10/10 and winning "album of the year" in Decibel magazine. (I personally think that there were better metal albums out there, but it's definitely up there, if maybe not on my top-ten list).

from that album, I recommend "Swollen and Halo", "The Sweetest Curse" and "The Gnashing"

And John Baizley (Vocalist, Guitarrist, and artist) has also done album artwork for many bands, including Kylesa, Pig Destroyer, Darkest Hour, and Torche.

    BQ: Ignominious Incarceration, Kayo Dot

    BQ2: they're both alright

    BQ3: sure

They're pretty good, I have both albums and I'll tell you what I know of them.

I'd call them more Sludge Metal than Prog Metal but they do combine both genres. They're fairly recent as well, I know they started out early 2000's but I don't know the exact date. I do know however that the lead singer does the cover art because he is a painter. That's all I really know about them. As for songs, I like Jake Leg, Teeth of a Cogwheel, Grad, Rays On Opinion, A Horse Called Gorgotha, Son of Sun, Red Sky and Tower Falls. Here's some EP covers.

Actually, I don't have answers for the BQ's. Sorry.

Baroness is a great band! They're one of the many very good metal bands to come out in the last decade. I have to say though, I'm seeing all the comparisons to Mastodon and I do like Mastodon just a little bit more than Baroness. I also highly suggest the band Isis, I think you may like them.

My favorite Baroness song is "The Sweetest Curve"

BQ: I saw a Blind Guardian album cover and thought "Damn, I need to check out this band" haha

BQ2: From the pictures you linked? I loved them both.

BQ3: Hmmmm, I think so although there covers make me think of more a post-metal band.

I don't really know how influential they are to todays metal bands.. if they were a lot perhaps you'd see it more.. I don't. Metal has always fed that darker side of my personality and I need it as much as the lighter classic rock I listen to - for me it's a matter of balance if that makes any sense. You know how much I absolutely love Fates Warning..most of any of the bands listed here. My favorites listed by album then song: Celtic Frost: To Mega Therion/"Inner Sanctum" Venom - Prime Evil/"Welcome To Hell" Fates Warning - Spectre Within /"Epitaph" Metal Church - The Dark/"Watch The Children Pray" Exodus - Bonded By Blood/"Pleasures of the Flesh" Testament - Souls of Black/"Practice What You Preach" Helloween - Keepers of the Seven Keys/"Cry For Freedom" Mercyful Fate - Melissa/"Satan's Fall" Racer X - Second Heat/"Living The Hard Way" Diamond Head - Shoot The Lights Out/"Just The Motion"
