How do I get my cats to not attack my dog???

Hey guys,

we found a dog a couple of days ago and our cats arent like most cats... they try to attack the dog and the dog freaks out. (He has no owners). My new dog is very scared around the cats so they cant be in the same room as each other. How can I get them to at least co-exist? I need help please.

Just give it time with supervision in the meantime. Your dog sounds very submissive and will probably avoid the cats as much as possible. The cats will get used to the dog's presence since the dog doesn't go after it. Hopefully your dog will eventually snap back at the cats to back them off a little so the cats don't push him around too much. If it were me then I'd just supervise them until they strike a balance and at some point I would start putting all of them in the same room while you protect the dog and disipline the cats when they act aggressive. It will just take patience and persistence.

I have the opposite problem. My dog isnt being mean but he plays too rough with the cat, who is not afraid of the dog. I will sit there with both of them on my lap and make them both submit to the other's presense.

    Hi,

Despite the cliché about fighting like cats and dogs, it's perfectly possible for the two species to live happily under one roof. However, it's also perfectly possible for a cat to injure a dog, and for a dog to seriously hurt or even kill a cat. To keep your home a peaceable kingdom, you'll want to arm yourself with some know-how before you add a new dog. Here's more info:

That's normal actually. Cats are very hard to discipline. You could try spraying your cats with a water bottle when they attack the dog.

spray the cat with water when he attacks or pick them up and put them in a room by themselves
