You can lie to police, but that is obstruction. You are never required to talk to the police, but if you do talk to them, and you lie, it is a crime.

The police can lie to you any time EXCEPT when they read your rights. That is the only time you KNOW they are telling the truth.

You have the right to remain silent (true)

Anything you say can and will be used against you (True , and note, they do not promise to record information that will help you, and do not promise to memorialize things that will help you).

You have a right to an attorney (true)

If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed (true, but not until first court appearance)

Other than that, police may use deception or any other tactics they deem appropriate ... including falsehoods.

    Good luck

Yes, it's not a crime to lie to the police contrary to popular belief. They try to use terms like impeding justice, it's all a scare tactic.

Words to the wise, it's never a crime when you don't remember on or off the stand.

Nobody gets charged with lying to the police, there's a reason for this, with the proper defense it's not a valid charge.

On it's face it's illegal, with the proper defense any charges of lying to the police will not stick.

Another element is if your Miranda rights weren't read, everything you say can't even be used to imcriminate you in such of manner of impeding justice.

It's possible to get an obstruction of justice charge for lying to the police. It's uncommon, but can happen, especially if you lie about a major crime.

If you don't like what the truth would bring, just say nothing. That is your right.

Varies by state. In some states it is illegal by direct satute to lie to a police officer who is doing his job. In others it is charged under laws like obstruction of justice.

Of course they can lie, THEYRE THE MAN...dont you know that? They are special.....(complete sarcasm) But no, you cannot lie to the police. There are many charges they can give you if you lie, like hindering prosectuion and others. Just another ONE WAY STREET.
