help on simple math?? confused?
hi
i just want to double check if the answer is 1/3 because my friends and i are having a debate
2(4x-3)-x=4x-5
please help!!
im really confused :((
and also, they said that after youre done distributing,
2(4x-3)-x
8x-6-x
instead of subtracting x from 8x, you have to add it
because you must do the opposite of -x which is positive x
is this true??

2( 4x - 3) - x = 4x - 5
=>8x - 6 - x = 4x - 5
=> 7x - 6 = 4x -5
arranging like terms one side
=> 7x - 4x = -5 +6
=> 3x = 1
=> x = 1/3

Hi:
2(4x-3)-x=4x-5 - original equations
(8x-6)-x = 4x-5 - Multiplication
8x-x-6 = 4x- 5 - gouping like terms together
7x - 6 = 4x- 5 - Addition
7x - 6+6 = 4x -5+6 - Adding the additive inverse of a number to both sides of the equation to move it to the other side of it
7x = 4x + 1 - Addition
7x-4x = 4x +1 - 4x - Adding the additive inverse of a coefficient to both sides of the equation to move it to the other side of it
3x = 1 - Addition
1/3 * 3x = 1* 1/3 - Multiplying the reciprocal of a coefficient to both sides of the equation to solve for x
x = 1/3 - Multiplication
Proof
2(4x-3)-x=4x-5 - Original equation
2(4(1/3) - 3 ) - 1/3 = 4(1/3) - 5 - Substitution of x with 1/3
8(1/3) - 6- 1/3 = 4/3 - 5 - Multiplication
8/3 - 6 - 1/3 = 4 /3 - 5 - Multiplication again
8/3-1/3 -6 = 4 /3 - 5 - Grouping like terms
7/3 - 6 = 4 /3 - 5 - Addition
7/3 - 18/3 = 4/3 - 15/3 - converting 6 to 18 /3 ( remember 6 * 3 /3 = 18/3) and 5 to 15/3 ( 5*3= 15)
-11/3 = 4 /3 - 15/3 - Addition
-11/3 = -11/3 - Addition again
-3 2/3 = - 3 2/3 - Division
It checks and equals
I hope this helps.

2(4x-3)-x=4x-5
Expand the brackets on the left.
8x - 6 - x = 4x - 5
Isolate for x.
8x - x - 4x = -5 + 6
3x = 1
Divide both sides of the equation by the coefficient of x.
(3x)/3 = 1/3
x = 1/3

guy above me forgot to subtract by X, yea the answer is 1/3
2(4x-3)-x = 4x-5
8x-6-x = 4x - 5
7x - 6 = 4x - 5
3x - 6 = -5
3x = 1
x = 1/3

2(4x - 3) - x = 4x - 5
Expand the bracketed term:
8x - 6 - x = 4x - 5
Simplify LHS:
7x - 6 = 4x - 5
Subtract 4x from both sides:
3x - 6 = -5
Add 6 to both sides:
3x = 1
Divide both sides by 3:
x = 1/3

2(4x-3)-x=4x-5
apply distribution on the left
8x - 6 -x = 4x - 5
subtract 4x from both sides
3x - 6 = -5
add 6 to both sides
3x = 1
divide by 3
x = 1/3

follow PEMDAS
Parenthesis
Exponents
Multiplication
Divition
Addition
Subtraction
2(4x-3)-x=4x-5
since 4x-3 are 2 diff terms
you multiply by 2
8x-6-x=4x-5
then you simplify the x on the left side
7x-6=4x-5
how you want the numbers to one side and the x to the other
you subtract 4 from both sides and you get
3x-6=-5
then you add 6 to both sides
3x=1
then you divide everything by coefficient the number next to x
x=o.3333333333
now all together :)
2(4x-3)-x=4x-5
8x-6-x=4x-5
7x-6=4x-5
-4x -4x
-----------------------
3x-6=-5
+6 +6
--------------------
3x=1

3 3
------------
x=1/3 or o.3333333333333
