I prefer to walk in or boat into wilderness areas. I live in Alaska and there are very large wilderness areas here. Some have heavy traffic like the Denali area. Others seldom have a human visit them. I can’t stand a bunch of people around me on a wilderness hike. It spoils the whole thing. So I either boat in or hike in. I use a light weight dome tent and I leave nothing behind to spoil it for the next person.
I have a special area that I hike into behind Glacier Bay National Park and have never seen another human there in 15 years. In fact I have never seen any sign of humans being there; no trails, no trash, no fire pits, nothing.

Typically we walk in usually about 1-2 miles off the road/trail. Really it depends on the situation. If I've had an awful week at work and when I come home Friday night we decide on spur of the moment camping, we drive in. It is the quickest way to pack and the less stressful. WInter camping is great too, we just went camping over New Years. New Years eve we got about 1.5 inches of ice and then just about 6 inches of snow on New Years day. It was awesome!

Raised on Walk in so we could get away from people, but like Winter because the mountains are more challenging and beautiful in the winter.
Drive in Camping is for those who want to sit around and drink beer listen to radio or just can't get away from their tvs.
Yurts or huts, May as well go to a hotel.

Wilderness, hands down. There you get away from it all. Just you and nature and you control where you sleep and camp out. The Wind River Range in Wyoming is great for that.

Cowboy camping off my DR650SE or ocean touring kayak in winter and summer.
Usually involves folding tarp so you have dry groundsheet, wall to windward, and
low waterproof ceiling slanting downward. Requires two trees, six stakes, some
sheathed 11mm nylon and stone for hammer. Indian-size fire sometimes made
when I'm in lee of beach cliff, mountain talus, etc. Are into speleology.

Walk in or Wilderness
I love backpack camping in Rocky Mountain National Park. I enjoy the solitude of solo camping with only the sounds of nature to disrupt my thoughts.

Cross country in a wilderness area, once you leave an established trail it really reduces the number of people you see.
