I've found crate training to be the best method. A dog will do their best not to soil their sleeping area, so the size of the crate is very important. Your dog should only have enough room to stand up, turn around and lay down. If s/he has enough room to poop in one end of the crate and sleep in the other, s/he will do it.

Wire crates are the best, as they still let your dog see what's going on around them so they don't feel so isolated. A lot of crates come with a divider so you can buy the proper size for the dog when they're an adult and just block off the extra room until they've grown into it.

Start off by leaving your puppy in the crate for about fifteen minutes at a time while you sit nearby reading a book or watching TV. If s/he whines, you need to ignore it. After they've sat in there for a while quietly, let them out to lots of praise and treats. It will take time before you can just leave the dog in there for a few hours while you're out.

A few key things to remember:

-the crate should NEVER be used a punishment; dogs are den animals and the crate should be associated with quiet time and positivity

-a puppy has to relieve their bladder approximately every 30-60 minutes. Keep that in mind and work up to leaving them in the crate for a few hours at a time. When you take them out of the crate, bring them to where you want them to go to the bathroom immediately and wait until they go. Hold off on the praise until they've relieved themselves to keep them from getting excited and going to the bathroom either in or right outside their crate

Aside from that, a puppy generally has to go to the bathroom at the following times:

-about 15-30 minutes after a meal or drinking a lot of water

    -after a nap

-after doing something exciting like playing or riding in the car

Keep that in mind, and try to bring your puppy to the designated "potty spot" as often as possible. When s/he has an accident, don't freak out, just bring the puppy to that spot and clean the mess up quickly and thoroughly. If they can smell their accident on the carpet or floor later, they're more likely to use that area again.

Smaller breeds are harder to potty train, as their bladders are smaller. It takes at least 10 months for any dog to get it down pat, it just takes patience and consistency.

Sorry about the length, I hope this helps. Good luck!

My dog potty trained easily by making her go on a newspaper in her kennel and then gradually bringing it closer and closer to the door until it was outside, and then we didn't need the kennel. It got to the point where she would ask to go outside when she needed to, because she knew she had to pee on the newspaper, and then we took it away. Praise your puppy and give it treats when it goes outside, and scold it when it goes in the house. Don't just take it outside all the time though, it has to KNOW that outside is good, inside is bad.

well mine was already potty trained when i got him. but buy a puppy training pad, if he wees on the floor absorb it into the pad, and take it outside or just outside the door. when you see the dog sniffing or scratching or circling take it outside immediately, let it see the pad, it should get the scent of its pee and get the idea that thats where it has to go. dont go in untill the dog has finished doing their business. praise straight after theyre done.
