You are not competing just against your 18x fellows when you head to SFAS (SF selection) you are "competing" only against yourself really. Though when you go to SFAS everyone in the Army that is trying to get selected plus the 18x candidates are there together. There is no percentage that they accept or deny regardless what you may hear from some people on here. They can accept 100% of the candidates or none at all. No one "needs" the extra Ranger experience, but it will help greatly. As I said in another question I made it through and got selected just fine and was never a Ranger. I had 3 years of active service when I went to SFAS. Joining under an 18x contract will send you to Infantry OSUT, Airborne School, SWIC (an SFAS prep course), these courses will give you the skills and the physical training you need to succeed in SFAS. They will not, give you the mental drive you need and this is the most important quality that the instructors will be looking for.
