Help with booking a flight online?

I'm going to study abroad in London at Queen Mary and I just had a few questions.1. Can you book your flight 6months to a year in advance? 2. Which site should I use? 3. When you book your flight can you choose your seat? (I really want a window seat). If you can how do you do it? Thanks. Best answer to the person who answers all three the best ^_^

The other answers are correct: 12 months advance max.

Kayak, com & Shermans are two top rated sites. Expedia is excellent, but you do have to join(not that Hard)

All the major Airlines will "guarantee" they have the best fares ONLINE! (for that airline) Some will charge you $20 - $30 to get a ticket by phone, speaking with some one.

You should have no problem getting a window seat if you book early, Most airline websites will show you the available seats on any flight.

Now some things to consider: If you use some site, such as Priceline, and there is an issue, you are stuck! The airline knows you beat them up on the price and they ain't too keen on helping you!

Join all the frequent flyer programs; You are gonna have a lot of miles at the end of your trip no matter who you fly on. The airline websites will help you get advance notice of any Fare Sales that might be happening, review them regularly.

If there IS a issue during your trip (before, during or after) the airline is more apt to help you if you did all the dealings with them direct, as opposed to a travel website. The airport agents are GOOD & can tell in a second where the ticket came from.

Make SURE you have all the phone #'s of the airlines you are flying IN YOUR PHONE. And it would not be a bad Idea to have the code share Partners (example: Delta/Northwest, Continental/United) as well. If stuff goes down and 200+ people are running to the poor gate agent, you can take your time, call the airline (even from inside the plane if allowed) and let the airline reservation agent solve your problem. So then you pass the 200 screaming people at the agents desk, go to your new gate, check in & then go have a beer!

And speaking of beer, for a long International Flight like you are taking, A one day pass at the Executive Lounges of your carrier might be a great Idea: Delta has the Crown Room, American has the Admirals Club, etc. Some even have showers! Quiet respite from the teeming masses, with agents to help you, free refreshments, INTERNET acess! Nice, huh? Passes are ~ $50 but you can use them on both ends (most times) and if there are any delays....Priceless!

One last thing : Luggage! if you are going for any length of time, talk to the school about shipping some of your things beforehand. They should be able to help you with Customs, storage, etc. But the airline will cahrge up to $50 for the FIRST bag and more after that.....And don't be overweight: 1 pound can cost ya $50...no kidding!

Hope all this helped, good luck & have a great time!
