How much fuel should I be using?
Hi Guys
Hopefully someone can help, I am currently driving a 1995 Astra Merit with a 1.4 engine. I am only getting 200 miles to a full tank of fuel (50 litre tank). Does this seem right? I know petrol is expensive but didnt think it was that bad, only been driving for a month.
Thanks
It has been snowing constantly here since I passed my test, I dont feel like I am driving any different though - will maybe book in for a service

1. The car is getting old and so will be losing some of its efficiency due to wear.
2. It may not have been serviced properly/recently/to schedule
3. You may be doing mainly in town driving.
4. Cars made in 1995 were not as fuel efficient as ones produced now
5. You may not be driving it economically

Hello lil. Most answers are correct the car is very old so don't expect anything upwards of 30-35mpg. However. usually maintenance like tyre pressures, only caring essentials in the boot. Regular oil and filter changes spark plugs distributor cap and rotor arm high tension ignition leads need to be checked. also see if there is a FUEL FILTER on the car somewhere see if its black or old -change it- also get the carburettor stripped and cleansed .I vaguely remember some DIAPHRAMS split on Early vauxhall carbs and this may be causing your trouble. sometimes a NEW CARBURETTOR is the only solution. while checking all that see if you have a BINDING BRAKE jack up rear of car and try turning both-rear wheels should spin easily, if there really stiff you brakes have seized or HANDBRAKE CABLE has seized . another way would be to just feel all the wheels(take wheel trims off) after a run and see if one wheel is REALLY HOT if it is that's the wheel that's seized.

There is something drastically wrong with your car. You are only getting about 18 MPG .Are you driving around in a low gear all day long. Maybe it needs a service Plugs filter etc.You should get at least 30 MPG in town . Being that you have only been driving for a month, ask someone with driving experience to listen to your car. could be running on 3 cylinders

Your car isn’t bad enough Lil;
I would say a car’s performance depends on two basic things:
1-Proper maintenance of engine
2-Driving a car on an average speed can make your car life much longer than its actual 5 years guaranteed lifetime by the dealers.
If you love your car and want it to be with you for long then above mentioned tips may help you out.

Something is wrong with your car. I don't know what, but I can say that my 70 Camaro with a 350CI V-8 gets about the same mileage your car does on the same amount of fuel

wow something very wrong with your car -you should get arround 30 miles to the gallon-so 1 tank should get you about 420 miles -depending on how you drive and traffic conditions .

Sounds right to me, remember its a 15 year old car even though its not a big litre it wasn't made to todays eco better milage standards.

If this is round town it's not far off normal but in this cold weather cars will do lees to the gallon because they spend more time running cold
