It should be able to be replaced without a problem. What is the name o of the breaker box? It should be on the panel cover somewhere. Along with a main breaker type that is suitable for that brand
Sylvania,,Crouse - Hinds Square D Type O and home brands. These are some of the newer ones.
Federal Pacific, Westinghouse Siemens Cutler - Hammer, Murray Sylvania Zinsco, ITE Some of the older ones.
You will need the make and manufacturer of the box and hopefully on the pane cover it will tell you the type as well.
They can and yes do go bad. If you are not sure about this have some one who has knowledge on this to either help you or just call a local electrician.

It depends on how old the box is, If it is indeed brand new you should have no trouble finding a new main breaker but it may cost as much as the deal of a box you have found.

Pat is mostly correct, however I would not say "It should be able to be replaced without a problem." Sometimes these breakers become outdated or lose their UL listing. Which may require you to replace the entire box. Also, you may need special tools to do this job, and will probably need to obtain a permit if you have to pull the meter. Personally, I would not recomend this job to a-do-it-yourselfer.....................hope this helps.

Yes you can replace the breaker if it can be removed, but only with the same size or smaller not in excess of 200amp. I assume it can be removed or is it non removable part of the panel, if that be the case you may have to change the whole panel.

usually, but you will have to pull your meter, because even with the main breaker in the off position the line side of the breaker is still "hot"

Not a do it yourself job. If you have to ask you are not qualified unless you have a death wish.
