well... my first spontaneous answer would be OF COURSE!
but let me temperate that enthusiasm.
India is not a place for everyone to travel. Tourists, in the worse sense of it should really avoid going there. By that I mean.. people who have no interest in local culture and customs, people who are not experienced in traveling, people who mean to only close themselves in a resort or hotel or to avoid looking at India in its wholeness, this including the greatest and the worse visions.
Now don't get discouraged. India is an extraordinarily interesting and rich country. But traveling alone there isn't necessarily easy. Without previous traveling experience and strong communication skills, it could get really difficult.
If you are not afraid to meet people living sometimes in really difficult conditions, if you have a sense of humbleness and if you are curious, India would be greatly rewarding.
To plan your trip, read...get a couple vaccines, check the weather conditions and pack light.
The north is extremely intense and sublime. The south seem to be quieter.
Never drink water from the tap and never eat raw. That should prevent you from getting sick.
Get a lonely planet book. It can be useful for directions.
and have a nice trip in wonderful India!
