I called my collection agency, and I asked them to remove the account and they said it was illegal?
I called and they basically told me that it was illegal for them to delete it, even though they said that once its been paid, we will tell the credit bureaus to remove the account. Can someone tell me what I can do right now, the account was $200 and less and I paid after 3 months and that was a year ago.

It is not illegal, it is totally up to the collection agency and type of debt owed, whether they will delete the account or not .
If they told you they would delete the account, if you paid, then I am afraid you have learned debt collectors lie and will tell you anything to get the money.
In the future, make sure and get the agreement from the debt collector in writing, BEFORE you mail them a money order for payment.

They are correct. Paying off the debt DOES NOT remove the record of that debt. Those are two separate items. the record of delinquent accounts stays with you for 7 YEARS. You cannot stiff a creditor and think that the consequences will go away after you pay them off. Credit scores are based on your credit behavior. If these kinds of records are deleted right after you pay them off, how can other creditors know that you have a track record of stiffing other creditors. The system is not designed that way. There is nothing illegal about them telling you a lie to get you to pay the debt that you LEGALLY owe.

What is an installment account - those are nearly impossible to delete.
If it was something like an electric bill or a doctors bill - non installment it can be easily removed.
